I can’t believe how many self-centered people have left comments about this. I suppose it never occurred anyone that YOUR illness and YOUR paycheck is not the only concern. Did you ever stop to think that maybe your coworker (or classmate) may be caring for an infant, elderly family member, or someone else with an otherwise compromised immune system (maybe due to cancer, chemotherapy, etc.)? You come to work/school sick, spread your germs around, and that person gets to carry those germs home, where they’ll do possibly catastrophic damage. Jeez, try thinking about someone other than your selfish prick selves for a change.

I just found this entry and thought I’d point this out… I’m a teacher, and believe me, I would have to be on FIRE before I took a sick day. It is a lot easier to go to school sick then write a sub plan. I would love to stay home and rest and get better, but it just doesn’t work that way in education.

People who care about other people being sick need to pressure their boss for sick days and health insurance.

I don’t care if I get swine flu. I’ll still drag myself to work because I need the paycheck. Sorry, but paying rent is more important. I’d love to stay home, believe me.

I’m with Rene. I’m a long-term temp and I do NOT get any sick time. If I take a day off, I certainly don’t want to waste it on a stupid cold – I’ll save it for when I’m drunk.

I’m a casual, but only because I choose to stay that way and there’s more freedom. Those people on salaries who get sick days and paid holidays can be real DRIPS!!!!

You’re kidding right?

Kids go to school and daycare and get sick on average 2 times a month! When they are healthy, their primary caregiver now has it.

If I took off work twice a month to nurse each and every sniffle and then extended to cover my sniffles- I would be fired!

If a co-worker doesn’t want to get sick, they can stay away from my desk.

I am not in the if-sick-stay-home camp. What about those without many days off? I’m going to give up my trip to the Grand Canyon just to keep you sanitary? I would say those healthy people should wash their hands, avoid rubbing their eyes, and take their vitamins.

I love the curse of going to work sick, people seem to flee like they were going to be struck dead with bubonic plague. I get a lot more work done.
