We ALL live here

Explains James, “My cool roommate tries to do something nice for the house, and then jerk roommate writes this.”

In the future, please consult with us before making house purchases. We ALL live here. Thx.

Seriously, Team Cormac all the way.

Cormac is a jerk who obviously spends way too much money on frivolous purchases, and then expects his roomies to cough up the dough. Seriously, light bulbs? I don’t think so pal. I’m not going halfsies on that tab.

Were I Cormac, I’d take the CFL with me wherever I went in the house, plugging it and unplugging it for my own use.

I dunno, I might resent having to chip in for matching blue bowls — save that kind of thing for after marriage, it’ll make it more special if you wait.

GO TEAM JERK ROOMMATE ALL THE WAY!

I kind of agree with the sentiment expressed, but it bugs me that it was expressed in that way.

Which, of course, is why it’s up at passiveaggressivenotes.com. Like, duh.

However, i still think that if ever a situation called for a pulling aside of the person and a quiet but firm word in his/her ear — that was it.

I had jerk room mates who would buy stuff without asking – usually things I would never use in a million years like ash trays – and then they would expect me to chip in.

However, light bulbs and a pan with a lid are fairly essential if you want to a) cook and b) find your way around the house at night. So I reckon this sounds like the kind of house where the only thing to eat cooked food out of is the lidless saucepan it was made in. If that’s the case, any bowls are a good idea, matching is kind of sweet.

    Go team Cormack.

I could be talking bollocks though because I haven’t a frigging clue what a CFL is called in my country! ;-)

  • #9   Swinstead

Sounds like you’re British (you said ‘bollocks’), CFL light bulbs are what we call enegry saving light bulbs.

Replacing your light bulbs with them will save money but it’s a bit of an asshole-ish thing to just replace them and expect everyone to chip in without even asking them first. Should’ve asked then there wouldn’t be a problem.

Woah woah woah. We’re (including Jerk Roomate) all kind of assuming Cormac is asking everyone to pitch in for said lightbulb/bowl/pan purchases, by this declaration, but I see nothing of the sort…
If he did it outta the kindness of his heart, then the reply is def. unwarrented…then again, if this is a “Look what I bought! Gimme Money!” then its a totally different story…

Elphaba is quite right, there is no demand for buckaroonies. Cormac seems nice, a bit excitable but generally harmless.

I agree with Elphaba and Nattie. I don’t get the impression that Cormac was asking for any sort of reimbursement. If I were his roommate (and we were responsible for paying an electric bill), I would thank him for buying the CFL bulb. As for the pan with the lid and the bowls, depending on my cooking/eating needs, it could go either way. But I don’t think Cormac was really digging for money here.

Ya know, I’ve heard of couples having huge fights when one person buys the energy saving bulbs and installs them without consulting the other. Evidently this is an issue that strikes some people in the pit of the soul. Perhaps Jerk Roommate is one such person who was horrified to see the change in light and potential environmental and financial savings to be made.

That aside- dude. It’s a lightbulb. Chill.

Team Cormac (whether he asked for reimbursment or not)!

I once had a roommate who complained about the fact that I expected him to split (along with 2 other people) the cost of a large plastic trashcan I bought at Target for the house. Apparently, he felt he should have been consulted personally before we switched from the “overflowing garbage bags stacked haphazardly around the kitchen” system.

I don’t know. The pan and the bowls are great if Cormac isn’t expecting chip-ins but CFL light bulbs can be about as ambient as my middle school cafeteria. I dunno about you guys but yellow tinted light everywhere would drive me insane. Maybe that’s the roomie’s beef. Either way, he didn’t need to write it on the dry-erase board. Talk to Cormac in person, Douche.

I guess the second roommate would rather meet and deliberate extensively rather than just having someone pick up things for the house when the need is apparent. He’s acting like the guy is infringing on him by purchasing that stuff. If I were Cormac, I’d put the bowls and CFLs in my room and ban the asshat from using my pan.

And I agree that these bulbs bring out the worst in people. I bought some a couple of months ago, and my boyfriend has a major attitude about it. Hell, I paid for them.

CFLs are really cheap in California- the power company subsidizes the cost so they end up being about $1 each. They also come in a variety of color temperatures, so not all of them cast the sickly glow often associated with florescent lighting. One major complaint about CFLs is that they all contain mercury which could end up in landfill, blah, blah.

Anyway, Cormac’s roomie is a wet blanket.

oh man i had a roommate that would do “nice things” for me like put away my butter or put my mail in my room but it wasn’t because she felt like doing something nice. it was because she didn’t want any of my stuff anywhere in her way as if she owned the apartment and i was some random person that borrowed the second bedroom from her. AND if she was actually doing something nice like offering to get me anything at the store that i happened to need, she would totally fuck it up. even if i just gave her a short specific list. example: buying special K red berries (which i hate) after i had specifically written “regular special K.” and then i had to be stuck with paying for it when i didn’t even ask for it. (after that, i stopped accepting her offer to pick up a few things for me when she went shopping. especially since every time she offered to do anything at all for me she would make me feel bad/guilty about it every time i accepted her offer)

so basically i’m with the second roommate on this one just because of my experiences.

wow that was a lot but i have so much more to say about that roommate.

Is it possible that Cormac didn’t buy these items but got some of them as gifts (except for the bulbs)? Like, he went home and his parents got him some extra bowls that they didn’t need, or took him to Sam’s club or something? One of my roommates goes home occasionally and comes back with a car packed full of food and stuff that her mom buys for us. I’d never complain. And my general experience with “house” shopping is that we trade off every week between the three of us for groceries, and if we finish something (or feel we used more of something than the other housemates) we run to CVS or something to replace it (like, I tend to drink more milk so I try to buy it more often).

Oh, and “we don’t use lights because it is light until 10?” You’re freaking retarded. So after 10, it’s lights out for everyone because you “don’t do lights” and can’t be bothered to flip a fucking switch? I can’t help but hate your mother for bringing a piece of slime like you into the world.

Sweet LORD Team Cormac ALL the way. I completely had a roommate like that, who refused ANY sort of change, including lightbulb changes. Though she was a raging bitch and just decided to make a stand against everything.

Once, we had a fee on our electric bill through no one in particular’s fault, and we had to each chip in $3 just to cover it, no biggie. My other roommate asked her for it, nicely, when she was making some pasta on the stove. Our BITCH roommate, turned around with a look of pure evil in her eyes and goes “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?!? WHAT AM I!?!? MADE OF MONEY!?!?”, turned, ran down the hall to her room and SLAMMED the door so hard she cracked her doorframe. Leaving her pasta to overflow and boil, I went and took it off the stove and placed it on a heating pad on the counter. I was pretty much used to her insane antics, but my other roommate(who takes shit from no one, thank God) ran to Bitch roommates’ door and said quietly and calmly, “If I knew asking you for $3 would have been such a production I would have paid it out of my own pocket, you bipolar CUNT!”.

I swear, I have never laughed so hard in my life. I had tears streaming down my face, belly aching laughs for at least half an hour.
Seeing Bitch Roommate every day after that was just as funny. She never apologized, and we paid the $3. Since we have all moved out, I’ve heard Bitch Roommate has gone through leases and other roommates like water. They must not have liked being screamed at about tiny things. Who would have thunk it? lol

Sorry for the long rant, this post just set it off for me!

I kinda agree with “LK // Jun 27, 2007 at 5:52 pm” on this one. Cormac is probably future-passive-aggressive. (I secretly think roomate James has totally misjudged Cormac.) I can totally hear Cormac saying, ‘Yeah I slept with your girlfriend; but what about the time you didn’t chip in for the matching bowls and pan? And the whiteboard too! You never contribute to the house; Asshat.’

Also you CAN find alternative uses for “… roommates who buy stuff ‘for the house’ that only they would use.” i.e. pan with lid = bed pan. (You should probably only do that if they forbid you to use it though….)

    P.S. lol @:

I think Cormac was asking what the other roommates wanted to get with the money they saved and was just suggesting ideas. Plus, I bet they have to split the cost of lightbulbs. My business shares an office with another business and we run into this crap all the time. They get all “pissy” if you don’t hold a freakin’ UN conference over every little decision. Then they complain they never have enough time to get anything done. Sometimes you just gotta make the decision for everyone. Go Cormac!

I’ve had the roommate who bought things for the house without consulting me. Often, when she did not expect me to split the bill, she would expect me to get the next thing (which was usually 3 times more expensive than what she bought).

To solve the pent up frustration, we ended up putting a list on the fridge of all the things we thought the house needed. We each had veto power over the items. Anything that survived the list was split equally. Everything else was a personal expense – and the other couldn’t use it.

The thing about CFLs is that they last forever. That’s how they’re energy-saving, right? But if Cormac bought the bulbs towards the end of a year’s lease, he wouldn’t enjoy their long-lastingness. So he wouldn’t actually save money- he would just be paying it forward to the next renters. I’m with Team THX.

I love it! Esp. douche-y asshat “we don’t use lights” kid. I had a friend who was the same way. The only light he needed was from his computer monitor, he didn’t wash his underwear(he’d just wear it awhile and then buy new y-fronts), and his place stank of mold spores and cool ranch doritos. Sounds just like “marc” is the same sort.

Oh, way to defend your position with homophobic rants, I can see who the mature one in the house is now.

I agree with all the folks who pointed out that Cormac never asked for any money in return for these purchases. My roommates and I often make “house purchases” such as cleaners, light bulbs, trash bags, condiments, etc without expecting that we’ll be reimbursed, just that at some point in the future someone else will buy new trash bags or whatever when we need them. Cormac was probably just announcing that they got new stuff, and maybe hoping someone would say “thanks, C!”

    Team Cormac!

Team Team all the way! I love this picking sides stuff. Don’t you team hatas realize that you are indeed forming your own team? Team Anti-Team?

Cormac, how dare you write cheery notes and try to save people money? Your roommate does not have the money for such indulgences. How will he pay for his WoW or My Chemical Romance tickets? Now he might have to go another month without washing his HIM t-shirts, or cutting his bangs….

Since Cormac’s not asking for money (as far as I can see), the issue jerky-roommate’s having with the new bowls/pot could be one I’ve had with several flatmates: different taste in housewares. I using nonstick pans, ex-flatmate objected to even having them in the house because the nonstick stuff has chemicals of some sort in it. I hate busy-patterned dishes, my boyfriend hates my plain white dishes. Etc. etc. The roommate’s note could just be a really bitchy way of saying ‘Even if I didn’t have to pay for it, I have to live with this stuff in my house for however long the lease is, can we at least get stuff we all can tolerate next time’.

Wow, I never thought I’d be sticking up for the notewriter!

I think the roomate was planning to marry an electricity co. heiress and is worried how this will affect the dowry.

I’d appreciate it if you could point out exactly where you see the sarcasm in Jerk Roommate’s statement. And why would you insult someone who’s apparently on the same team as you? And you call Corey stupid?

That jerk roommate is just that. I agree with whoever (and everyone?) who asked how Cormac and the OP could stand living with the asshole.

Man, I get ocular migraines and let me tell you, there is nothing more irritating than fluorescent light when you’re getting one of those.
People should really ask when making changes like that.
Also, it’s rude to expect people have money to spend on extra bowls and then buy them, expecting to collect later. Not cool, that could dip into people’s food money for that month. :(

why do people keep mentioning that the guy expects others to chip in? he doesn’t write that anywhere. it sounds like he was trying to buy things for the house to be nice, not to be reimbursed. why do people keep commenting about his concern to be paid back?
