Hi,

we once had two ladies in system management who decided to turn off the consoles for the servers.
That was not at all a good idea for a UNIX server in the 80s.
They ran on for some more hours and then stopped until power off/on.

We only lost a day of work for about 50 programmers, not that expensive.

But I wold say: If you do not know what you change, do not change it.

umm. i haven’t seen this office setup, but chances are if it’s a room full of computer servers it should probably be air conditioned. computers overheat dude. and if they crash cause your selfabsorbed self turned off the air, ya gonna be in trouble. sometimes it’s not about you, or the environment.

I don’t know if this story in and of itself is an urban myth or not, BUT, I know for a fact things like this do happen.

A similar incident at my husband’s workplace back in Nov.

Believe me, he, and the rest of the network tech crew were ready to kill someone.

I think I’m leaning towards true although hoax is possible. I’ve met people in a professional environment who would do that and send this kind of email but I also used to work with a group of environmentalists so the angle didn’t seem strange to me. I come across a lot of miserly, overtly ambitious and overly eco-conscious people entirely too often to dismiss this completely although it’s a little too perfect to accept at face value.
