I’m kinda surprised Kerry hasn’t closed the comments on this one yet. It’s been an entire year of the same three basic comments:

“Waiting tables is hard and it’s my right as an American to get a tip no matter how shittily I do my job!”

“Quit your bitching and get a better job if you hate the pay so much!”

“Servers’ pay is atrocious and they should get paid better, so I usually tip well. But shitty service gets you no tip.”

I know that a relatively anonymous environment like the internet is probably the safest place psychologically to put in your two cents and feel heard and important as a human being, but this topic seems to have turned just about everyone who comments on it into crabby fun-suckers with sticks up their butts. Lighten up and quit gumming up the works. :{

(Although I think somebody else has already said the same basic thing. I think… So I am a possible works-gummer-upper. Double :{ )

just thought you’d like to know that i went through 30 hours of training before starting my job as a waitress, as well as a written and practical (waiting on tables) exam. granted, i’ve never not been left without any tip and i only work seasonally (no regulars) and i’ve never left my table hanging for 20 minutes without service.
maybe more restaurants should look into regular training for their staff. i hated it at the time, but it’s been a big help.

These poor, abused servers. The job is a stop-gap. It is a temporary income while you:

a) go to school
b) search for a real job
c) make some extra money in addition to your REAL job.

I’m amazed that so many of you are so defensive of your job as a server. Are you really so proud of it? How about when you’re 50. Nice, that’ll be classy. Then you can take your fist full of tips (that you didn’t even have to earn by providing good service because crappy service somehow warrants an automatic 10% these days), you can put it in a coffee can in the cupboard of your trailer and whine about your miserable life.

For anyone who wants to say “Well you’ve obviously never been a waitress … ” Yes I have, I just had too much self worth to attempt to make a career out of it.

This thread was supposed to have been about tips, and since everyone else seems to have forgotten, I’ll just throw that reminder out there.

So in regards to tipping, if you servers want to get tipped, Provide. Good. Service. It’s pretty easy. Don’t be a bitch. And based on most of your retarded posts … no wonder you’re complaining about your tips and wages; anyone who pays decently can see your glaring lack of personality and anyone who is desperate enough to hire you probably isn’t suprised that your whiney ass isn’t getting tips.

And just to avoid any speculation – 10 years ago I made $5.15 (min wage) and between $70-$180 in tips per night. That’s why the pay is so low, dipshit. Because if you’re good at it (and it’s certainly not difficult!) then you make as much or more than many salaried workers.

Nope. Wrong. Shitty service=no tip. Reading all these comments from customers, it should be pretty clear. All you have to do to get a good tip is be friendly, pay a little attention and bring the food we order in as timely as fashion as is possible. Not that hard.

People who bring children into a restaurant should automatically have a 20% service fee added onto their check. Scratch that, children shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants. Period.

Is it really passive-aggressive? If someone leaves you no tip or a penny you should know that your customer was not happy with their service. Would it be better if the customer just came out with it at the end of the meal and said “You were a terrible waitress, you ignored us, our order was wrong, you never refilled our drinks, you were rude, etc. etc.”? Because I generally don’t like to do that in a public place. So what is the best thing to do? I don’t want to talk to the manager, to me that’s passive-aggressive. He’s not the one that screwed up. The server needs to hear it directly. While I don’t think just saying BOO You Fail is enough information, how is someone going to learn from that? They need specifics. So what is the answer?
