Unfortunately for you it is very easy to sniff network traffic to find out what mac addresses are valid, and then to clone one of them. If this was a guaranteed way to secure your network, don’t you think everyone would do it? Enable WPA encryption!

My network is secured. ,In fact, I am leery of connecting to anyone else’s. I will in a pinch, and for only a short time, but who knows what viruses, worms and other little digital crawlies are out there?

I hope that particular ISP also gives you a free wireless router with free security and free encryption software as part of their service. Otherwise, who the hell are they to demand that you share something you have paid out of your own pocket for?

If they want to be “cool”, then perhaps that ISP (who I can’t seem to turn up through a quick Google search – who is it?) can figure out a way to make the Wi-Fi free from their end and not pass the burden down the line to the paying customer.

Sorry, but when I pay for a service I don’t want some total stranger getting in the way – which is why I hate cable tv services so much, especially if you live in an apartment building.

The bottom line to me still remains: freeloading is rude, objectionable behaviour. Which is certainly not to say that I have never done it and don’t ever do it, but I sure don’t feel like it’s my God-given right.

I’d just like to point out that leeching small amount of net access (ie, checking email, not downloading movies) isn’t going to affect the guy’s internet bill – unless you’re living in some cruel place that charges by the MB for ‘broadband’ (like, australia).

of course, if it’s being used daily then sharing the costs *is* the polite thing to do.

there’s an ISP in toronto that actually *requires* customers to offer free wifi (with bandwith limits so their personal connection stays fast). now that’s cool. it’s always nice to be able to check email on the go.

We used to leave our network open for philanthropic reasons. We stopped doing that when we received an anonymous message via our own printer reading “thanks for the internet!”. It was nice of them to thank us, I guess.

This reminds me of my in-laws. They don’t have internet connection and said to me “we’re waiting for you guys to get wireless b/c *my brother* said once you get it we can get it off you for free”
At least they’re honest?!

which reminds me of our trash situation… my in-laws put their trash with ours b/c they’re to cheap to pay for trash pick-up. Never have they offered to split the costs.

*sigh* Merry Christmas! I bought you internet service and trash pick-up.

I live in Boston, and know more than 1 person this has happened to. I thought it was basic common sense- if you don’t want to throw in for wireless, then drag your cheap ass down to starbucks. Does this really not happen in other places??
