when peaceniks get pissed

November 25th, 2007 · 55 comments

writes ludovic from geneva: “i went to bil’in, a palestinian village cut through by the security fence, for the weekly friday demonstration. there’s a house there whose owner rents out the ground flat to activists to be used as a meeting place, sleeping hostel, that sort of thing. the day was obviously tense, but seeing the sign above the sink made us all smile.”

Does it really count as P/A if the person STATES it’s P/A? I mean, I find that saying “I was being sarcastic” seems to take the sting out of the original sarcasm. But, on another note, it would be nice if they specified just what they wanted to happen to the dishes. From the picture it looks like the dishes ARE clean, and stacked up nicely to dry. Perhaps note writer wants them put away, or they aren’t clean enough and they would like them rewashed? Or possibly this is just a sign to help some of the locals learn English? Do they have a P/A sign for the DOOR and BATHROOM also?

Ha, I love the format. Imagine if they all used it:

This is a passive aggressive sign: MICROWAVE!

This is a passive aggressive sign: OFFICE FRIDGE!

This is a passive aggressive sign: NOISY SEX!

This is a passive aggressive sign: PUBIC HAIR!

This is a passive aggressive sign: MY STUFF!

I am a little concerned with that open outlet right there, which presumably is near the sink - water and electricity DON’T mix… gives a whole new meaning to being shocked that the dishes are done

Maybe the sign is in referance to the garbage bag and open food bags around the clean dishes.
Maybe they don’t want to re-clean the clean dishes and it’s a way of telling everyone to “PUT YOURE CRAPP AWAY!!”

    CB
They may have been used as weapons, you know, whats a demonstration without weapons in a Palestinian village on a tense day ?

Hmmm… do you think peace in the Middle East can be found through the judicious use of passive/aggression such as this?

    Ah, no.

    A place for everything,
    Everything in it’s place,
    Please put your dishes away,
    Please don’t clutter my space.
We let you rent a flat,
When you come here to protest,
Your Mom does not work here,
    Disorder we detest!

That bag of rice is about to tip over - what slobs! You know what a bitch it is to try and clean up SPILLED UNCOOKED RICE? And NEAR THE DISHES, TOO!????

Maybe the cord is going to one of those little dry vac things that cleans up linoleum better than sweeping… or it’s going to some Chinese Water Torture device used in the demonstration… I mean, that’s WHY they did the dishes in the first place… to clear the sink out for torture time!

Wow, a titular PAN… a first for me.

However sweet “This is a passive aggressive sign” may be, it still doesn’t replace a carefully worded rant, preferably decorated with underline squiggles and lots of little extras.

Hey, if you click on the picture it will take you to the original site and it says that the sink is outside. So I guess that DISHES is just to inform people to put the dishes there?

Someone commented earlier that it isn’t truly P-A if the P-A is acknowledged up front. I agree with that, and think someone should draw a penis on that sign in pink pen.

There’s a nice open space between the I and the S in the word “dishes” for a little noodle-doodle, don’t you think?

Those dishes look pretty clean to me. They are sitting in a dish drainer. Maybe the sign means something else. Maybe it’s secret activist code for the neighbors across the way, or for the Palestinians. Interesting that it’s in English, no?

    I am here in Palestine,
    To protest this borderline.
I needed a place to hang my hat,
Luckily, I have found this flat.
I’ve eaten rice and some knishes,
Bright sign directs where to leave my dishes.

Ahem - it’s *not* outside, it is inside. And yes, the dishes are clean, which only prove that P/A does work sometimes :)

At any rate, Canthz_B’s poem cracks me up no end, should I ever get back there I’ll be sure to post it next to the sink! :)

Maybe the protestors will start using this tactic.

This is a passive agressive sign: STOLEN LAND
This is a passive agressive sign: ETHNIC CLEANSING

A sad first attempt at a poem:

    Fellow peaceniks:
    Let’s avoid frustration
    and exemplify cooperation.
Clean up your own mess you should.
Wash your dishes- for the greater good!

(Wandering Penguin, I’m trying to get “for the greater good” going for you)
