Aside from not getting paid for it, I fail to see the difference between writing a note for someone else to read – especially when you want that someone to learn something in the reading – and writing, say, a magazine article.

If the only reason to ever take care in writing something is getting money, grades, or recognition for it, than it’s a sad world indeed.

(Also an English major and professional editor, who derives GREAT fun from her work, and who realizes that picking on people is not always synonymous with mean-spiritedness.)

I need some advice, WR. I have spoken to Barbara Woodhouse, but she has never come across the problem before. I have a peeved pet peive. No matter how consistent I am with 'i' before 'e' except after 'p', nor how many treits I give it, some faucets of its personality are just plain drippy, nasty and trifling. What other training tips would you suggest?

Actually, I believe it depends on the style guide you’re using… There was a big ‘to do’ in the news a while back about the elimination of hyphenated words. I agree, though, Grammar Snobs are Great Big Meanies. I guess I’m a meanie.
