A friendly tip from your waitress

At the Washington restaurant where Scott works, a customer recently informed one of his coworkers that when she was a waitress back in the day, tips were regarded as a luxury (a sentiment that’s been echoed by many commenters on this site).

Thrilled as she was by this little history lesson, Scott’s coworker decided a little present-day tutorial was only fair. Says Scott: “She retrieved her most recent paycheck (zero dollars and zero cents…in D.C., servers make $2.77 an hour, which all goes to taxes), wrote a little note, and dropped it on the table after they had paid their check.”

Just so you know a tip is a luxury!

      ha, screw that! I never have nor will I never work food service. Besides, growing up in Vegas, I’m used to shelling out the extra cash, so I usually tip well if the service was good.

      But it’s bullshit that you should have to bribe someone to get good service. I now live in Japan and servers, bartenders, delivery people etc. refuse tips. They’ll run down the street after you to give your money back. They also bend over backwards to give you great service with a smile.

      Totally, Angela. It’s all about choice. The stupid worker could’ve CHOSEN to be president of a massive corporation instead of being a server. I mean, it’s not like there’s this thing called “demographic reality” that precludes most people from achieving satisfying, rewarding careers or anything. Let’s skip tipping altogether from now on. Until the peons CHOOSE to become engineers, no dental work for them!

      well, typically the waitress brings back your credit card receipt to sign. i assume that’s when she hit them with this.

    If the customer had to mention to the server that a tip is an extra on their bill (a luxury), perhaps that was a hint asking for better service. Dropping your pity party in some one’s lap is unlikely to garner sympathy. Just annoyance. Way to cut off nose and spite face!

      When I worked as a bookkeeper for a restaurant, I freqently had situations where a check cut was for nada. Servers have to claim a percentage of their nightly receipts. If you work for 5 hrs and your checks total $300.00, you have to claim at least $30.00. Do the math. At an average of $2.50 phr, wages don’t even cover their taxes and they could end up owing money at the end of the year.

      Ummm…that equation excluded tips actually received. Frequently the table that pays 20% balances out the table that paid 10%. The table that paid a 30% tip balances out the stiff.
      Sometimes, wonder of wonders, servers do not report all of their tips.
      Over time, it works out. Otherwise we would have no servers.

      Wait a minute. That makes no sense. Below a certain income level you are exempt from taxes. How could they owe at year’s end? In fact, the Gov. sends you a check for the taxes they took all year.

      had a buddy that waited tables at the marriott in d.c. about 15 years ago — a $60,o00 a year gig… IRS made an example of the wait staff there for the benefit of all wait staff everywhere who don’t report their tips — totaled up all of their checks, assumed a 15% tip, and presented the appropriate demand for payment… might be related…

      um, 15% of what exactly? of their wages? of the earnings of the restaurant? did they factor in the fluid workforce? to be honest, this sounds like an urban legend to me… I understand having to declare a $30 minimum, but if you work 8 hours and there are no customers for your shift… I must admit, I am not nor have I ever been a “server” or what you might call “waitstaff” but I have a sixth sense when it comes to BS, and this, comrade, smells a lot like crap.

      took me all of about 30 seconds to find this and several other similar articles… my buddy actually got his tax bill in 1990, a couple of years after he left marriott. how ’bout doing a little research before spouting off about your “six sense,” ‘kay “comrade”?

      The article cited clearly states: discrepancies between what the waiters said they earned and what the restaurant’s credit card receipts showed they had received.
      It does not say 15% of the credit card receipts of all tables waited on by particular servers.

      “The IRS audit compared the total tip income reported by the restaurant to the IRS with the individual tax returns of the waiters who worked there-a comparison that showed large discrepancies between what the waiters said they earned and what the restaurant’s credit card receipts showed they had received.”

      My 6th sense says bs on top of bs.

      Well, if my consistant inability to discern between stationary and stationery bother you so much, I think I’ll just have to keep that in mind… :) It’s not likely to change anytime soon though, I’m pretty set in my ways! Now if you were my thesis supervisor… THAT might make a difference. But even then I’m not sure.

      Ah, so it’s the tip estimation that you take issue with? I Can’t link to nexis/lexis as it is a subscription service, but here’s a quote from Washington Times article dated June 18, 2002, that applies a 14% tip estimate on employers — similar to the situation that i posted where the irs went after the waiters themselves in the late 80s — but keep reading, it gets better:

      “The 6-3 ruling allows the IRS to continue collecting taxes from employers on cash tips based on those shown on credit card receipts.

      The IRS uses a system to estimate all tips using credit card receipts and assuming that cash ones averaged the same amount. Restaurant owners say the average – 14 percent – is not fair.”

      here’s another, from 1996, NYT, Oct. 24. This one didn’t rely on credit cards alone:

      The assessment method in question involved a case brought by the Bubble Room, a pair of 150-seat family restaurants in Captiva Island, Fla., and suburban Orlando. An I.R.S. agent, assigned to monitor compliance with tip reporting, assessed the restaurants for $32,000 in Social Security taxes, based on his estimate of unreported employee tips in 1989.
      The I.R.S. examined tips on meals paid for by credit cards and assumed that people who paid cash tipped at the same rate

      Or was your issue that the IRS didn’t go after wait staff directly? here’s a quote from Assoc. Press, Oct 29, 1999 regarding focusing on employees instead of restaurants… like they did in the pilot program that i originally posted, which only targeted a few upscale restaurants in D.C. in late 80s. That program, as i stated, was meant as a deterrent.

      “Even if waiters and waitresses aren’t reporting all their tips, the Internal Revenue Service says it will no longer audit restaurant owners as long as they do their best to comply with the tax laws.
      Instead, the IRS is shifting its enforcement focus to the employees, even though officials acknowledge that will be far more difficult to track due to lack of money and manpower.”

      ooooo! — here’s one from all the way back in 1979, Washington Post, June 16. This one actually concerns Marriott in DC and is clearly analogous to the case i mentioned:

      “According to Barbara Van Blarcum, director of corporate information for Marriott, the tip audits grew out of a routine tax examination of the company. From information provided by Marriott, the IRS calculated how many customers a waiter or waitress might have served on a typical day and how much food he sold, according to Van Blarcum. Using charge slips and bills, the IRS then computed how much a waiter or waitress would have earned in tips, assuming 10 to 15 percent of the bill as a gratuity, the IRS said.”

      in this case, the IRS presented the tax bills directly to the employee. i believe i have clearly vindicated myself in the face of your unwarranted and ill conceived attack; i usually don’t see folks at this site accuse each other of bs out of hand, but looking at some of your other posts — well, ’nuff said… consider yourself served.

      Again, if you’ve never done this kind of work then you have no idea.

      Just like the immigration system. Few born americans have any idea how bad it really is.

      How do you think the minimum server wage has been $2.13 (in most states) longer than i can remember?

      Most servers I’ve worked with regularly got $0 dollar checks. Payday is always a joke. And no there is not usually overtime. A lot of places I’ve worked got away with ignoring any and all safety regulations also going so far as to not fix broken appliances and not replacing destroyed safety gear. How do they get away with all this? Lobbyist. Every year almost regulations and pay increase ideas come up and the restaurant lobby gets their panties in a wad complaining they can’t afford to pay people a living wage while at the same time trying to gauge the waitstaff for every penny they can. Talk to someone about the “convenience fee” they charge us for every credit card tip we receive. Yup, that’s right, every time you tip on a credit card, we get charged. To be fair the credit card processors gauge the hell out of small business owners but this is a special screw just for us.

      Seriously, just because you can’t believe it doesn’t make it not true. That’s how a lot of things are swept under the rug, because it can’t be true if it’s too sinister to be fathomed.

      One the other side some of you are right. In some cases, in some cities, in certain neighborhoods, on certain days and when venus is in the right house we do get paid well. We all have the $300 night story… That’s why it’s a story because the vast majority of us make around $100 a night on average.

      Right now I have so much education and experience I can’t even get a restaurant job to complain about.

      Seriously though; if you’ve never served tables then shut up.

      If you claim $1500 in tips over two weeks, the taxes that come out of paycheck covers the $1500 in addition to your measly hourly. If you are in 25% tax bracket for example, you owe $375 in taxes (just for tips). Making $2.77 an hour for two forty hour work weeks gives you about $220. You then owe taxes on $1720 for that pay period. For that reason, I have gotten nothing but $0.00 paychecks for years. I also am honest about my tips and owe money at the end of every year.

      This thread begs the question:

      WHY oh WHY would anyone continue working for a company where they make NO MONEY???

      My point exactly. You wouldn’t.

      If people are working for nothing, they are either too stupid to get another job, their parents require them to work anywhere to continue receiving allowance, they get a discount on their booze, or they cannot add correctly and they ARE making money.

      BTW, $100/night isn’t that terrible. It’s not career money, but waitressing for $2.75/hr, IMO, isn’t a career. That’s college cash :)

      Just because the checks are $0 doesn’t mean that they actually have zero money. They do after all get tips. But its a terribly unfair system for wait service people. Its fine for those in big cities who make a lot, but what about the people who may live/work in small towns or don’t know what else to do? Its easy to get stuck in a job where you depend on tips.

      You think living paycheck to paycheck is bad, try living day to day. As a stripper I relied almost exclusively on tips, many strip clubs charge the dancers to work & its all about hustling. Few pay the girls which is appalling to me.

      I think that there are some people missing the point. No, being a server isn’t always horrible pay. But it is wrong to promote bad tipping. The reason people wait tables vary an it is not always because they are “stupid” or “underqualified”. If you had ever worked in a restaurant you would know that. Single parents work in restaurants, very convient if you have young children, teachers work in restaurants because they are underpaid, as do nurses. College students also work in restaurants because it is flexible. I know plenty of people with BAs who end up in the restaurant business and it has nothing to do with how stupid they are.
      If you have a problem with tipping, fine. But expect prices to go up if waiters start getting regular wages. Believe me, its cheaper for you in the long run this way.

      P.S. I know someone who was given a bill by the IRS, it happens. And its not just your credit card reciepts, they charge you based on ALL your sales. Also why has no one mentioned tipping out? This is a way a shitty tip can actually COST a waiter money.

      Seriously? I’m from the UK too and ALWAYS tip, at least 10% (which I know is less than is deemed acceptable in the States, but, yeah, we do pay people relatively well).
      I thought, like, everyone did. I mean, my friends and I are students so not exactly rolling in it but we’d never leave without tipping. Sorry, this isn’t meant to be rude (and that’s not meant to be passive aggressive! Whoops.), I’m just genuinely surprised.

      took my first trip to the UK last august. daughter’s boyfriend, a british citizen, could not understand giving a tip. the bartender looked at me confused when i waved he should keep the change. in the end, whether the server earns higher wages through higher prices or the customer tips, the customer is still paying.

      You give a tip for good service, appreciation, etc. Now you don’t give your $200.00 an hour lawyer a tip but I bet he sends you a christmas card. When I stay in a hotel I tip the maid. Her usual pay probably isn’t jack. She cleans the toilet makes my bed.
      You appreciate when your boss gives you a bonus. Well, your the boss when your a customer. Anyone who provides a personal service, should be appreciated. An atta boy/girl does not put food on the table but if that’s all you got, at least fill out the comment card.

      Well, in Britain we pay people a minimum wage, which is more than £5 (around $10) an hour. Admittedly, it’s quite high because things are more expensive in Britain, but still, waiters should get paid more than a measly $2.77 per hour! So, I’d tip in the US, but probably not so much in the UK. It depends where I go.

    Clearly, this annoying customer never waited tables for a living. Anyone who has ever relied on tips, and been paid less than minimum wage because you were expected to make it up knows better. As a closing waiter, I used to get paid less than min. wage, even though some of my hours were closing the store when tipping customers were all gone.

      I had a wait job at Pizza Inn, which was a buffet restaurant. Because the customers used the buffet, they felt like they didn’t owe the waiters a tip. Never mind that I was getting paid less than min. wage, and as mentioned above, I had hours where there weren’t actually any tipping customers. That was seriously the shittiest job I ever had. And it reinforced that I should stay in school.

      Dude, I know tons of people who have an education and still work in restaurant. It’s become a running joke every May at the restaurant I work in to see how many people are still there that graduated a year before. Teachers, nurses, even people who have their Master’s degree. I’m working as hard as possible in school to ge out of the restaurant business but I expect I may have to be there awhile.

    Tipping is a cultural norm; like all cultural norms, it differs from place and place AND those differences should be respected while in those places.

    Servers work hard and good service is an art form. Better servers generally make better wages, and that’s the same general rule that is generally followed in most occupations (General Lee speaking, that is).

    So it looks like I’m Team Tip and Team Server.

    But, “just so you know” — servers are not slaves. They’re not born into the caste of servers. If they sit around and bitch about their pay, their tips, or their customers, they should either find a different career, a different workplace, or resign themselves to being grumpy bitching malcontents (who generally get smaller tips).

    And just so you know — maybe a tip is not a luxury, but in most cases, it IS a choice. It’s my choice, just like it’s my choice whether to eat out or stay home, or go to your restaurant or to your competition. Good service is your JOB. It’s what you’re SUPPOSED to DO.

    By the way, I now live in Korea, where there is no tipping, the servers are paid miniscule wages, and the overall service is fucking delicious.

    I think secondsout’s #15 gets it well: no faster way to piss off your waitress and get your food messed with somehow than to alienate the waitress. The whole system of paying below min. and claiming you make it on tips does stink (I know. I was a waiter many moons ago). Maybe that is why I tend to try to be generous when I tip. Of course, I do assume good service. The one or two who have been lousy (rare, but happens), get little from me. But this is rare. And don’t get me started on the whole having to pool the tips scheme.

    Was first established in Tea Gardens in England somewhere at some time (Tea Gardens were the indirect result of some Duchess’ cool idea that if you get sleepy in the afternoon, you should eat something) because if your service was slow your tea was cold.

    A metal box was placed in the middle of the table and you were expected to make it rattle if you wanted warm tea.

      Well, in the US, restaurants can pay you less than minimum wage, as you are expected to make up the difference in tips. However, you are required to report your tips, and if you do not make as much as minimum wage, the restaurant is legally required to make up the difference.

      So, I’ve found 6 or 7 sources of TIPS. 3 of them acknowledge the 1st usage and claim that it was brought into TEA GARDENS (not for meals) and turned into this new meaning.

      I talked to a friend at UofT who says the same thing. Today we’ll look for a source offline and she’ll talk to her associate, who is more specialized.

      I’m not kidding. I’d talked to a few people about this the first time because I know how these things are. If I’m gonna prove it, tho, I’m gonna prove it for real.

      You know what? They SHOULD get paid by the owner. It should not ALL go to taxes. That is ridiculous. He has to pay for the food, he has to pay for the plates he has to pay for the chairs and tables. Staff is a business expense, end of story. If he wants to cut out the middle man then let me get my own damn food and save the tip. That would be fun, actually (but, yes, unsanitary.)

      It’s true – someone talked about retail – those people can bust their asses helping you or not, it doesn’t change their pay rate unless they’re on commission. EVEN if they’re on commission they still receive a WAGE.

      As a customer I should not be expected to pay the wages of your staff. There have been many retail sales people that I would have LOVED to tip. Because to me, a tip is an expression of gratitude. But, in those places, I’m not even ALLOWED to tip. They still serve me, don’t they?

      That being said I always tip minimum. More if you’re awesome and less if you suck.

      I am the boss after all :P

      If the owner is expected to pay higher wages, *you* will still be paying the server just through a middle-man. Your food costs will go up (probably higher than what you usually tip) and if your server blows you off, she will make just as much as the server who jumps through hoops for you.

    I think it is ridiculous that these restaurants are somehow allowed to break the law and pay less than minimum wage. That problem needs correcting. A really disagree with mandatory gratuities, an ironic sentiment considering the meaning of gratuity.

    In the UK, everyone has to be paid a minimum of £5.52/$10.90 per hour, and of course in many places, you give tips if you feel the service deserved it.

    I think the people who claim that they wouldn’t earn enough to live, if they weren’t tipped a lot, are working in the wrong place – it is the responsibility of the employer to pay their staff, not the customers…

    Basically, there is something seriously wrong with a business which doesn’t earn enough from sales to cover all expenses, including wages for staff – or is it just exploiting the cultural norm of tipping, to screw the staff out of a decent wage?

      Minimum wage for servers is determined by state laws, not the federal minimum wage. So, no, restaurants are not breaking laws by paying their servers 2.13/hr. This is not much different than sales people who are paid based on commission only. Take real estate agents in this market, for example–0.00/hr doesn’t seem fair either, but it happens.     i work in retail. i am expected to wait on customers hand and foot, follow them around gathering items, run back and forth to get different sizes, etc. i have to be there for several clients at the same time. i have to remember sizes, colours, outfits, scents. on many occasions rich customers basically expect me to be their personal assistants for entire afternoons. i have never been offered a tip, and i have never complained. why? because i get wages to be there and do that. because it is a high end store, i get a whopping twenty-five cents above minimum wage , and i guarantee i’m running around on my feet as much as if not more than a waiter.

    Well dont blame the customer, blame the damn cheap ass that owns the restaurant and insist in not paying his waitress a decent wage, he can not expect the customer to pay the servers completely, that is just moronic.

    and NO I pay the price on the menu, thats IT I work just as hard for my money and I am not paying any extra as a tip or anything else, I suggest the restaurants raise their prices to cover a decent pay to the workers.

    There is no rhyme or reason in the fact that a server can serve 3-4 tables in an hour and get tip from all of them which lands then at at least $20 hourly wage, I dont know anywhere else they earn that much.

      I agree about this, here in Missouri the servers get paid usually 2.15 an hour and work for tips. Now if it’s a slow night and you don’t make anything they have to pay the difference of the hourly rate plus tips you make so you get minimum wage. Which this year in July will be $5.85 an hour.) Now this was explained to me after I waited on a busload of blue hairs,about 20.They all ordered water, coffee and soda and shared 3 baskets of fries. Running my a** off for more refills of the drinks. Taking all my tables for 2&1/2 hrs. They left me a combined tip of 5.00 I heard one of them saying it was too much and way more than 10%.(plus they stole all the sweetners that were on the table.)
      Yep I quit that same day!

      Whether you agree with it or not, restaurant owners expect people to pay their staff’s wages. Here, servers make $2.52 an hour. It is not the server’s fault.

    As a former waitress and bartender, it’s been my experience that there are certainly bad servers, but they are typically outnumbered by bad, BAD customers–people who make ridiculous and endless demands, expect you to bow and scrape for them and then get pissed off if you have enough dignity to balk at their behavior. Honestly, some people are just impossible to please–usually people like this customer. It’s just too bad the waitress didn’t make her paycheck comment more clear and biting. Having dealt with many customers like the one in this example, I bet she probably turned around and complained to the manager and got the waitress in trouble anyway.

    All reasons why I would *consider* tending bar again if I had to, but would never, EVER wait tables again. People are assholes and the money isn’t worth the stress.

    Anyone who makes 2.77 an hour in this day and age is understandably angry. Maybe back when grandma was a waittress, the hourly rate a waitress was paid was livable. Given that it is not that way now, until wait staff gets paid a livable wage, tip them for chrissake!

    I was a server for a few years during college, and my husband is a restaurant owner/manager in the upscale casual sector. I can tell you that not every employee performs at 100% out of a sense of duty or loyalty to the business, and that is why tips are great (if all involved are on the same page about them).
    Tips are performance-based pay, so the server’s motivation to give good service is high. I liken the US tip system to a good, free-market economy. Team Keep Socialism Out of Our Restaurants!

    When I was in college, I was both a server & bartender. I would like to think I provided excellent service … and very much appreciated a nice tip. However, there were days that I couldn’t give a shit about anyone and my tips were representative of that attitude. The lady is right! Tips are a luxury! Do a good job and you’ll be rewarded! My pet peeve, though, is going to get a cup of coffee and a can stares at me to tip, go to McDonald’s and I’m supposed to tip, go to the bookstore and I’m supposed to tip, go to get my oil changed and I’m supposed to tip. Give me a break. The federal government subsidizes … I don’t!

    Tips are not a “luxury”. They are a necessity. For anyone who has worked in the service industry, (and I was 15 yrs. in the beauty industry) I will tell you that is what would break or make my monthly income). Period. I agree that your server should be rewarded with a gratuity reflecting the service recieved. However, 15 – 20 percent is considered standard in the U.S. Anything less is going to be reflected in the the “service” received upon your next visit. Service Professionals have looong memories. We remember who treated us well, and who dissed us. Consumer beware. It doesn’t matter if it’s a restaurant or a beauty salon…. Whe Know Who You Are.

    If the waitstaff are so pissed off about being paid so little, why don’t they just leave…? There comes a point where they’re just choosing to be victims of the horrible government. Plus, there’s no actual law saying that you have to pay income taxes. If their money is getting taken away, take it to court (in the states, anyway).

      You’ve already decided that I’m an asshole? Don’t care that I tip 20% for regular service, and 25% when it’s good? I think that the laws are ridiculous, but even though I make less than most servers (look up “full time student working in lab”) I tip more than most servers do. If you’re mad about your job get a better one, don’t hate the people that you’re hoping for charity from. Also, you can try and find the income tax laws. You won’t. And I’m not sure if you know how to “use” quotation marks right…

      Of course, the truth of the matter is that most people who are waiting tables, especially at shitty restaurants, are doing so because they can’t get anything better. when I was in high school, if I had my choice between waiting tables or working at a bookstore, I would have jumped at the chance to work at the bookstore. But you have to get that first job somewhere.

      You “I NEEDED to wait tables to pay for college!” people are ridiculous. Have none of you ever heard of an ON CAMPUS JOB? When I applied for jobs my freshman year I got to take my pick of all kinds of menial, thankless jobs that I completely hated but had to do for the money. My wages sucked to be sure, but they were certainly better than what I hear all ya’ll complaining about. There are a lot of options besides waiting tables and it sucks for you that you chose that industry.

      That being said, I still tip 20% for good service. I’m not totally heartless. I just believe that you should suck it up and do your job, and if you don’t like it, quit and find another. No one ever has to be tied down to their current job if they don’t want to be. Ever.

      Many on campus jobs don’t have the flexibility of a restaurant job. If I’m in school from 9-7 M-Th when can I work on campus? Like 20 hrs. for 7 an hr.? I can work more than that Fri.-Sun. in a restaurant.

      yes, we do expect a tip because the restaurant expects a tip. where i work they take 3% of all of our sales at the end of the night- sometimes it’s more. if you don’t leave at least a 3% tip that means we lose money serving your cheap ass- WE HAVE TO LITERALLY PAY OUT OF OUR OWN POCKET IF YOU DO NOT TIP. and no, i’m not getting a new job just because you have no class- but i sure as hell will call you on it.

    Do you never stop and think that maybe the US system of making people dependent on tips is, well, wrong? I’m in the UK, and I usually tip (around 10% in a full-service or rounding up a few £ if it’s more casual) unless it’s already included on the bill, but I would never *dream* of tipping 20 percent! If you’re used to factoring in that cost into eating out, why not just pay staff a higher minimum wage? I really don’t think the service would suffer, and you’d get fewer angry waitstaff with zero-sum payslips… But fwiw, I’d always follow the tipping norms if I were in another country, crazy though they may seem to me – only polite to do as the locals do!

      How about you simply make a minimum living wage that all employers are compelled to pay, and tips are just a bonus on top of that? Yes, restaurants will need to increase the cost of food, but if you’re used to tipping 25% on your meal it’ll hardly be noticeable. After all, isn’t the point of legislation to govern societal issues? TBH, the vast differences in laws across the states of the US makes very little sense from an objective view, as does the way your gov’t treats the average employee. I know this is hardly the forum for it, but it startles me that there are so few Americans prepared to even suggest a system that can allow people to earn so little might be wrong.

      umm… either you tip the waitstaff, or the business owner increases the cost of the food to include the tip for you. Either way the customer has to pay the wage – but with tipping, it’s actually probably cheaper since the owner isn’t skimming too.

      I’m in Canada… dollar costs close to the same as the American dollar right now… and I know their food is cheaper than ours. And I know that when I was in Ireland, their food was incredibly more expensive than ours again.

      Hmm… wonder if the difference is the ‘cost’ of paying the waitstaff their wage? Just maybe?

    Sure seems like all the server-bashers ’round here assume every customer is a rational person. I’ve been in the service industry for years, started in a hole-in-the-wall dive bar, making no money, but most recently I worked in a 5-star joint where an average 2 person table tab was $200, I’ve always generally made excellent tips, because I give excellent service.

    But the fact is that while most customers are pleasant to interact with, not all customers are rational. Some are rude, bitter, and downright cruel. Why should I quit my job, as some have suggested, simply because 1 out of every 20 customers is a prick? “Gee, if you don’t like your job AT ALL TIMES NO MATTER WHAT you should just quit, you big whiner” Just because a server may complain about the worst customers does not mean we hate our jobs.

    1 story -
    Once a customer wearing a watch that cost far more than my car berated me for bringing butter that was too SOFT. “What kind of idiot brings butter like this!” she screeched. The only other butter was still in the cooler, and very hard. I brought her some. “What is wrong with you? This butter won’t spread at all!” Finally I had the prep guy bring out a selection of butters, in varying degrees of softness. That, she found insulting, and complained to my manager, and tried to get him to not only comp her meal, but to take the cost of it out of my PAY to “teach me about respect”.

      Just a few thoughts:

      In my admittedly limited serving experience (2 years at the same restaurant), I find that the tips that I receive don’t necessarily reflect the service given. I think that most people either tip well, or they don’t, and many times it has nothing to do with my service. There are times when drinks are filled, customers are happy, and food is prepared and served in a timely manner. The satisfied customer will express how great the service was and tip 10%. There are also people who will tip 20%, in spite of waiting longer than they should for their food, refills, etc because I have been double-seated, have forgotten to put in an order (which we all have done at one point or another), or am waiting for the salad guy to finish his smoke break. Either way, things tend to even out over the course of a week, and my tips pay for my rent, student loan payments, and household bills in addition to other regularly occurring expenses (groceries, car maintenance, etc).

      When customers arrive at the restaurant, they have the tendency to be hungry and cranky, and we have all had to deal with the woman who treats you like shit for trying to sit her at a table rather than a booth, or the crazy music lady who insists that Frank Sinatra and/or any horns that are on the playlist are “rushing her to leave” and must be changed immediately. Dealing with frustrating customers is part of the job. It is in my best interests to give them what they want, and if they can’t be satisfied, they will be gone soon enough. Their bastardly behavior is not a personal attack. So I move on.

      Most customers are just looking to have a nice meal away from the house, and they are polite and friendly. The ones who aren’t will not be obsessing about so-called bad service two hours after they are gone. So why should I worry about them? I am home with cash in hand, and if they left me a sucky tip, someone else probably made up for it.

      If you hate being a server, do something else. Expecting anything from total strangers (and sometimes people that you know) mostly leads to disappointment, so just be thankful for what you DO get. Or find a job with a steady paycheck.

      I would suggest for people who have no people skills to find employment elsewhere where they could make their own wages and see how far a bad attitude / behavior gets them there.

      It surprises me that so may people get so offended when bad servers who give bad service with bad attitudes don’t get tipped. I think those are the kind of people who shouldn’t work for that industry if their income depends on their people skills which they obviously lack.
      Now, if it’s a good server who gives good service with a good attitude, I’m more than willing to leave a good tip as a gratuity. Those are the people who could do really well as a server.
      Not to mention that some restaurants include the gratuity in your bill anyway especially if you’re in a large party.
      And Max obviously has no people skills.

    Oh please! I waitressed for several years, and tips were crucial to paying my bills. However, I worked my ass off to earn those tips. I didn’t just expect the tips regardless of my service. Good serve = good tips. Anyone in the US who dines out should include the cost of tip in the cost of their meal. Those who think they shouldn’t tip would scream the loudest if restaurant owners just raised the meal prices, which they would have to do if they paid the servers a full wage. If you don’t want to tip, then you should either cook for yourself or eat fast food. BUT if you are a server who wants tips, then you should do your job well. It goes both ways.

      There is a hell of a lot more effort going into actually being a waitress or waiter, then just serving or cooking fast food. If you work in a fast food restaurant, you make minimum wage. If your job is that of a server, you generally don’t. You get paid the same whether you cook the food well or bad, whether you serve quickly or slowly in a fast food joint. Servers don’t have that luxury – everything they do is scrutinized, and they suffer if the cook, busboy or hostess screw up. I will never tip an employee in a fast food restaurant, unless I actually saw them do something above and beyond that deserved more than minimum wage. Lala, if you really feel that way, next time you go to a sit-down restaurant, why don’t you tell your server how you deserve tips just as much as they do, even though you make probably 2 or 3 dollars more an hour than they do. Make sure you do this BEFORE your food is cooked so they have the opportunity to give you a special treat.

      the reason this pisses me off is because i hear waiters bitch about not getting extra money when i worked at the post office for years, literally getting screamed at every other customer for postage rates, lost packages, late delivery- things i had no control over. i have been threatened with violence and once with death. i have been called every name in the book by irate customers, and i have dealt with it, at minimum wage, same as any server. being a waiter is not that hard, i know because i’ve done that too. (and if you’re wondering, i stayed at the post office so long because i was hoping to get into the corporate office where they make over 25$ an hour)
      adequate service does not deserve a tip, it is expected.

Imagine working at the post office and getting blamed for things not under your control, while making a whopping $2.77 per hour. At least you were getting minimu wage – be glad for that. Do you have any idea how arrogant you sound when you claim being a server isn’t hard? Maybe you’re job was one of the easy ones, and apparently you got paid minimum wage (curious as to where you were a waiter at), but most servers that I know run their asses off for next to nothing in regular wage. Again, they live on tips. In the U.S.A., the society we live in DOES require tipping for adequate service (adequate means barely sufficient which would imply you received your food and drink, but nothing extra), and even more for outstanding service. If you’re a regular at any restaurant, the servers must LOVE seeing you come in. I’d be surprised if you received anything other than adequate or worse service from them since they have nothing to gain from doing well.

      Tipping is not a “ridiculous notion” – it’s a widely accepted practice in the good ‘ol USA – which is WHY employers get away with paying less than minimum wage. Federal and state governments accept it – even the ACLU or they would be all over it (honestly it surprises me they’re not!) Just because YOU don’t like it, don’t penalize the worker, write to your own representatives. (OR risk shoddy service or worse from those who know your views on tipping.) I have no problem tipping as I consider as payment for part of my dining experience – if I can’t afford to tip, I don’t eat out and expect someone to wait on me. Anyone who says they can just find a different job is living in a fairytale – it’s not always that easy.

      Being a server isn’t necessarily harder or easier than any other service position – I never said it was, okay? My point is that it’s the ONLY service position that I’m aware of that is paid less than minimum wage. That’s the point I’m making. It’s easier to deal with all the shit that goes with working in the service industry when you’re getting paid for it, you know?

      Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think piss-poor service deserves a tip because they’re not even fulfilling their job if that’s what they’re doing. But adequate deserves 10 to 15% depending, and exceptional deserves 20% plus.

      Bottom line, go with the custom of the USA and tip, or don’t complain about the crappy service and funny taste in your food at the restaurants you frequent.

      why not take a stand and refuse to endorse the government’s policy on lower wages for waiters? stop helping the government justify lower wages. stop tipping, make it a problem, make it obvious that less than minimum wage is unacceptable, and that the public shouldn’t be shamed into paying extra to make up for low wages. perpetuating the tipping/topping up wages cycle won’t help anyone in the long run. when someone does something for me that goes above the norm, i am truly thankful. i love letting someone know that they have made my experience better, and in a service setting, leaving a tip gets that point across. but mandatory tipping? i refuse to reward someone for doing only what is required because they accepted a job for less than minimum wage.
      and just because something is widely accepted doesn’t make it right or fair. good for you if you think you’re helping- but the whole system needs to change. waiters deserve full wages, and tips should mean more than “i don’t want to look cheap”.

      That makes a whole lot of sense – punish the server for this. Sometimes any job is better than nothing, and I for one have respect for people who work what they can find instead of living on welfare until they find something up to their standards. Perhaps you live in a place where jobs paying a decent wage are easy to find; good for you, but a lot of people aren’t as lucky as you are. I’m sure the servers would love to receive a lecture about rebelling against the establishment in place of tips. I’m sure they can just explain that to their landlord and the utility companies when they can’t pay their bills and all will be forgiven. I’ve heard some pretty crazy excuses before, but this one is close to the top for far-reaching. I guess you can tell yourself whatever makes you sleep better at night, but karma’s a bitch. Someday you may be in a position where you depend on others. For your sake, you better hope they’re more generous than you are.

      Sure, servers frequently get blamed for stuff that isn’t their fault. But servers also love to brag about what they do to the food of the people that stiff them. Do you really think that is going to convince anyone that their attitudes are any better? Say I go to a restaurant and I get crap service and leave a less than satisfactory tip. Then the server goes into the kitchen, continues to prove that he or she has a poor attitude and tells everyone that the next time I come in that they should piss in my food. If I get wind of this, I’m not only not responsible for paying for my meal (nor will I leave ANY tip) but I could have the restaurant reported for health code violations. That WOULD be the server’s fault. And I’m not too naive to know that this stuff actually happens in restaurants every day.

    I’ve been reading and not posting at this site for some time, but this topic made me want to speak! I was a waitress for exactly a month before I got fed up with the whole tipping thing and quit. Servers get screwed for everyone’s screwups, including the cook, who ISN’T depending on the tips to make their check. Then you have to split your tips with buspeople that do a crap job cleaning the table, thereby lowering your tip from the next customer. That’s on top of the customers you bend over backward for that don’t bother tipping a dime. In my opinion, it’s not like real estate or hairdressers who are, in general, basically self-employed – servers (and retail sales, for that matter) work for a business that is taking all of the profit and resdistributing it as frugally as possible. A server works for a company, as opposed to franchising themselves under someone else’s sign. The laws should be changed to make restaurants pay at least minimum – but until that time, the customers who don’t tip because “it isn’t their job” need to consider the fact that they live in a society that makes it so.

    I currently work as a bartender and server and frequently receive checks with no balance. At $3.20/hr I work an average of 30 hours the sum total being $96.00. I pay $60.85/wk for health, dental and vision insurance combined leaving $35.15 remaining. I pay taxes on my hourly wage plus tips claimed AFTER SSI, medicaid, and temp. disability Insurance are taken out (all of which are mandatory by law in my state).

    If I make more than $250.00 my check will total out to be for a zero sum. My “check” is actually my legally required proof that my tax liability is cared for. It is also how I total out what I still owe in taxes for that week (usually 1/6 to 1/4 of what I made that week).

    Heres the deal, I make a lot of money for which I work very hard, but that does not preclude guests from tipping appropriately. Tipping, love it or not, is part of dinning out. If you can’t afford to tip properly you can’t afford to eat out. If you have a moral objection to it order take out or stay home.

    I’m so tired of people misunderstanding taxes. It’s not possible for you to be taxed for more than you make, you can’t go into a “higher tax bracket” and end up making less than you made at a lower bracket, and the amount of money withheld from your check has no bearing on what you pay to the government. WillforYou explained it well….you’re getting a zero dollar paycheck because more money is withheld than you made in that week. Bottom line, change your withholding or work more hours.

    Oh, and I know 4 people who work as wait staff, and they make more money than I do in my shitty corporate america desk job. All thanks to the misconception that tipping at 15% is the BARE MINIMUM, and 20% is more expected nowadays. So waiters and waitresses need to stop being whiney babies, and learn how to be nice to customers.

    People really don’t seem to understand that we don’t get paid a living wage by the restaurant. We RELY on the tips of others. Years ago, when SHE was a waitress, they didn’t rely as heavily on tips, or she wouldn’t have made such a thoughtless remark.

    Tell him if she comes back to slap her a bit. To all of you people who say that we as servers need to be nicer to our customers, I’m sorry if you got a shitty server. We’re not all bad, and in my case, I give respect to my guests until I’m disrespected by my guests. At that point, it’s open game.

    In Australia, we only tip for good service – it is not a given right. However, waitstaff are paid actual real wages ( ie: you can *gasp* – live off them )

    We travel O/S often, and it really annoys me to have to pay for sub-service in the States because ‘nobody else is paying them’.

    However, I enjoy tipping well for fab service.

    The whole system needs to be looked at, IMO. Employers should have to pay their staff.
    Paid staff = happy staff. Happy staff = good service. Good service = handsome tip.

    Alway leave your tip in cash, and not on the credit slip. That will slow down the government raiders. 15% for normal service. yes you should have worked in a restaurant to be allow to eat in them. Poor service maybe 5%,excellent service 20% and a nice smile and a joke too.

    Haven’t worked in a restaurant for 40 years, but eat out often.

    I worked in a restaurant near the U.S./Canada border, and there was constant drama over the fact that Canadian customers didn’t realize that the wait staff’s pay was mostly made up of tips.

    We had one crazy waitress who went out into the parking lot and threw the coins she had been left at her customers’ car as they were pulling out, yelling, “Here, you must need these more than I do!”

    I cooked at the restaurant, and did easily three times the work as any waitress, while most of them made four or five times what I did (without reporting the majority of it on their taxes). Some of them even received public assistance for their kids because their claimed income was so low, while they were actally making salaries their kids’ teachers would never see. And most of them thought nothing of fiddling the orders (i.e. giving a customer free dessert or substituting a more expensive side dish for the cheap one that came with the dinner special) the put the customers in a friendly, high-tipping mood.

    The whole silly system just invites corruption.

    I always try to give a tip, even when the service is poor because I know that waiters/waitresses are taxed based on an assumptive amount made in tips.

    I rarely stiff people, but when a server gives a performance that is above and beyond the worst I could ever receive, they get nothing. My sympathy dries up and they’re on their own.

    The managers in that restaurant need to be sued.

    Waitstaff get paid less based on the assumption that their tips will bring them up to the normal minimum wage.
    It is ILLEGAL for employers not to bring their pay up to minimum wage when the tips aren’t enough to do so. Take them to court. You should be getting the same minimum wage as everyone else no matter how crappy your tips are.

    Look, there is this attitude that crappy tippers are crappy people – they’re not. Maybe you, server, are having a crappy night, but maybe I am too – maybe I had a hard day at my job and I wanted to treat myself to a dinner out. You might be having an off night, but I am too, and the difference is that I am no longer at work: it is no longer my responsibility to perform the duties of my job. Don’t rain on my parade by taking your shit out on me, because you have no idea what I was doing at my job earlier that put me in my mood. You had better believe that as much as some people dump on you, people get dumped on at their other jobs all the time.

    The first job I ever had when I was 16 was working as a file clerk in the customer service department at an insurance company. Sometimes I answered phones and transferred them to the appropriate personnel (namely the people working on their case.) Do you know how many people screamed at me, a high school student, when they weren’t happy about their insurance claims? As uppity as people get about their food, they are 1000 times more uppity about things like insurance that cost them thousands of dollars. Not only had I never seen most of the cases that came through the office, but I did not have any understanding of how cases were decided. But being the first person to answer the phone, I got the brunt of the blame.

    I’ve written a lot more than is probably necessary here, but if nothing else please understand my take-home point: a LOT of people get crap from other people at their jobs. Some of those jobs pay better than others, but taking crap from people isn’t what makes servers any more entitled to tips. So while I understand that you’re working below minimum wage, I honestly could give two shits if you feel further put-upon that you have to deal with nasty people. We all have to, every day.

    Maybe not a degree but in New York State one must obtain 1,000 hours of training then pass a written and practical exam to obtain a cosmetology license. I think it’s fair to say that those requirements are equal to an associate degree and certainly more involved than the training to become a barista! Also of note, NYS has the most lenient requirements for cosmetology of all the states!

      yea I guess degree was the wrong word. My bad. I did actually go to a college where you are required to get a diploma before they allow you to take the state exam. Either way, it’s not an easy thing to obtain and I’ll 100% agree it’s close to an associate degree. I worked damn hard to get what I have so when someone hands me a $1-3 tip it’s very disheartening.     If servers do not earn at least minimum wage from tips + hourly wage, then the law requires that the restaurant make up the difference. Therefore, all servers should earn at least minimum wage, and they probably earn a lot more than those who only receive minimum wage.

    No way can I read all these comments, but already read a few asinine responses from those who simply don’t get what waiters go through. Indicating we “stupid workers” don’t have to take the low paying job in the first place.

    Perhaps you’ve never uprooted your life and moved a thousand miles away from your family and hometown in hopes of making something of yourself. Unfortunately for many creative individuals in performing or visual arts don’t have the “luxury” of getting some high paying job where we’re given the respect that we deserve and EARN over and over again.

    Does this mean we deserve to be treated unfairly? By the likes of your rich, ignorant ass from Vegas? I suppose your doorman should put up with it if you decide you feel like screaming at him every time you feel he hasn’t met your best expectations? Or the cab drivers who get New Yorkers from point A to point B should just “chose to be president of a major corporation” as Ghrelin commented above?

    The truth is, not everyone has that choice to make, and you of all people are grateful for that! Do you really want to live in a world without anyone driving your cabs or serving your food, Ghrelin? And don’t think Japan has simply found a way to keep their waiters in check. They chase you down the street because they are already PAID a regular SALARY as a waiter! Their culture teaches them that to accept your extra money on top of that would be crude and bring bad karma. They actively do not WANT it because they don’t NEED it.

    In America (can you say A-MEEEEERRR-III-CAAAA?) servers are NOT paid a regular salary. They are provided a small hourly wage, usually ranging from $2 to $4 per hour, which serves ONLY as a cushion for their taxes to be taken out of each week.

    This is why we get checks for $0 or for $0.29 or so forth… Do you want to know how the restaurant figured how much to take out of our checks for taxes? They report 15% of our sales as income!!!

    That means if you and your bratty, ugly, disrespectful teenage girls and your bitchy little wife sit in my section and your check comes to $100 for food and drink, guess what!!! The restaurant has ALREADY REPORTED to the government that you tipped me $15.

    Then I get to share at LEAST one third of that $15 with the food runners, table bussers, and bar! At my restaurant we actually have to share 45% OF OUR TIPS!!!! That means out of your $15 tip on a $100 check… I am lucky enough to walk home with $8 of that!!!!!!!

    So if you tip me any less, you’re actually taking money out of my pocket! GET YOUR GRUBBY LITTLE HAND OUT OF THERE!! You can’t have it! Believe me, if I’m waiting tables, it means I need the money more than you, Father-of-the-Year!

    In the restaurant where I work, I have been subjected to violence on more than one occasion by my own management, and am only motivated by the DAILY threat of termination. A threat that has lost all its meaning, but never it’s power as I need this job and have nowhere else to go at the moment.

    If you come in to eat, and you have to sit at a table or a counter and you’ve got a waiter, you KNOW GOING IN that you’re going to HAVE to pay at least and additional 15% on top of everything you order! If you can’t afford to do that, then hold your horses and order what you can afford to tip on or better yet… STAY HOME!!!! Let an ACTUAL PARTY OF FOUR come and sit in my only four top table! Take your bimbo girlfriend and your $2 tip and go try a McDonald’s instead!

    If robbing waiters of their own reported income makes you appreciate your wealth, I doubt very much I can appeal to your sympathies even with logic. So one last reminder… We have access to your food before it gets to you. We can also spot a bad tipper a mile away (pretty tightly linked with the way you treat your server!) You know what I’m suggesting. Karma is after all a big old bitch, and don’t think I won’t try to serve it to you.

    So the next time you find yourself projecting all the anger in your life onto your server, consider a few things…

    - More likely than not, your server is TEN TIMES as pissed off as you are about the service you are getting. 85% of that service is OUT OF HIS HANDS! He’s not managing the joint… He’s not frying up your burger… He’s not running your food out to you from the kitchen… He didn’t fix you that drink himself… Yet he is counting on the team he’s paying half his wages to for the help he needs to get you taken care of.

    - If you’re unhappy, for the love of Christ, TELL YOUR SERVER! And you needn’t say it with attitude or even worse, with syrupy-sweet-but-ingenuine politeness and overapology. You HAVE to communicate what it is you need to us! We aren’t mind readers, even though we are working as hard as we can to anticipate everything you could possibly need. If you’re so passive aggressive you have to take it out of my tip, consider that you’re probably also too scared to actually TELL me what’s wrong so I can fix it. LOOK, FOLKS… Don’t come in to my restaurant and take your miserable marriage or your disappointment in your children out on me, okay? I’m just trying to get you in and out of here and make sure you’re happy. Gimme that chance!

    - Know what the crap you’re complaining about!!!!! If the food took too long… Your waiter has NO power over that! All they can do is keep the pressure on the kitchen to get your food out to you AS you ordered it. If it’s taken longer than 25 minutes, you CAN expect your server to alert a manager to prevent any further delays. TRY ASKING FOR THAT (politely!) NEXT TIME!

    If you hate the seat you got or if you’re pissed you didn’t get a booth or if the place is too loud or if your food sucks, guess what…. NOT YOUR WAITERS FAULT!!!! You’ve got eyes and ears and a nose. Check the place out! If you’ve got a bad feeling about the place, LEAVE! Give your server the chance to wait on an appreciative group of people who are ready to pay a fair amount for a job well done by their waiter — or at least as well as is within his very VERY limited power!

      further, it’s a double standard. data entry jobs don’t dock pay if the numbers are entered wrong. nor secretaries for mailing letters to the wrong address. nor dental hygienists for missing a spot. a more stringent approach is applied to the service industry. unfairly.

If I came to work everyday and busted my ass and at the end of the week I got nothing, I wouldn’t come back…. I mean if I didn’t want to earn anything I would stay home and clean and do laundry or mow the lawn or something, I don’t get paid for those things either!

    Let’s not forget that bussers, food runners, and bartenders, also make a “tipping wage”. Servers then have to pay them for their services, because they don’t get tipped directly by the customers. It’s generally a set amount. At my restaurant they assume each table tipped 15%, I give 10% of that to the bar, 12% of that to the runner, and 18% of that to the busser. So on your $100 check I have to pay $6 to other employees on top of what the gov. takes in taxes. It doesn’t matter if you tip or not, I still owe that money. You see, the owners of my restaurant, and the gov. both assume you’re a human being with a soul and a basic understanding of how eating at a restaurant works. We keep working there because there are good people in this world who tip well, and make up for the cheap bastards who don’t, but that doesn’t make stealing my services ok. Service isn’t included in the price of your food at a sit down restaurant. If you don’t like it, go to McDonald’s where it is included. Enjoy the excellent service you get there.

    I didn’t read through all the comments, but the way it works is servers make the base pay and then tips are added. If tips plus your base pay do not reach minimum wage, then you get the difference. Not that min wage is much, but they don’t really make that little an hour. Hospitality and food service businesses do that to keep their costs down because usually servers make way more than minimum wage.

    Lately I’ve been getting and seeing other servers get “advice” from non-servers such as : “Find another job” and “If you don’t give good service, stay at home”.

    What about those of us who give great service? What about those of us that get embarrassed by the lack of work ethic or skill of our fellow co-workers? We have to pick up the slack for a lot of these servers, including doing most of their serving a lot of time just so that we aren’t chastised by the powers that be.

    There are many of us that love what we do, despite having bad nights once in a while. We love getting to meet the people, and we love the money we make. Yes, we make bad money sometimes. Ofttimes it’s not our fault we make the bad money. It’s the fault of the kitchen for not taking the time to read the ticket we send them. It’s the fault of guests who camp while others are waiting and getting more and more upset.

    There are many of us who stay in good moods through being sick, being stressed, being sad and being exhausted. We stay in good moods, we keep genuine smiles on our faces, and we are run like dogs. We do everything the guests ask for and more, we make it an enjoyable experience for them. In the end, we still get shit on a lot of the time.

    How is it a servers fault they got a bad tip when they managed to find the channel that’s showing the hockey game the guest wants to watch more than anything else? How is it a servers fault they got a bad tip when they not only suggested a good drink that the guest loved, but a drink that was cheaper than the horrible one the guest was going to order?

    How is making sure everything is correct and prompt, making sure the guest stays smiling, and making sure the guest has no reason to complain a bad thing deserving of a bad tip…or no tip?

    Many people say they don’t tip at all based on the service they’ve received from someone else. How are your past experiences our problem? We’re striving to make your next experience a good one. We put up with listening to you whine and cry, listening to your life stories, listening to you and your spouse fight and argue about the kids. When we’re asked for advice, we give it with a warning that we’re not doctors.

    This might sound like a bunch of rambling to a few of you but I assure you, this is the rambling of a good server, one of many that gets shit on by guests for no reason. This may sound like nonsense to a few of you but I assure you, this is the way it is. We’re not trying to put on a pity party, we are doing our jobs. A lot of us aren’t lazy like some of our co-workers. We don’t want them any more than you do! Don’t take it out on us by stiffing us or giving a bad tip.

    Don’t make our kids suffer because you were in a bad mood despite your experience being great. They have to eat too, and they rely on us to get their macaroni for the night. They are relying on us to buy their school uniforms.

    Our gas tanks are just as low as yours are, but you’re spending a hundred dollars to eat and driving an SUV. You can spare more than 2 bucks out of that gigantic wad of cash you pull out.

    When you use your Amex Platinum card for that 300 dollar check, bitched about having to pay an automatic gratuity and had it removed, don’t fuck us over — more often than not when you do that, it literally means that we pay out of our pockets for you to have the luxury of dining with us.

    Last but not least, don’t go out with the intention of being a prick to your server. If your parents taught you to tip 2 bucks on every check no matter the size, then it’s time you evolved past their teachings, especially if you were given great service. If we’ve given you one more drink than we should have, or we overlooked charging you for your kids drink, don’t screw us!

    Finally, if you have had something removed from your bill (comped), please tip on the pre-comp price of the check. Regardless of your getting most or all of your meal for free because of kitchen errors or kitchen stupidity, we’re still having to both: a. Pay taxes on the total price of the original bill and b. Tip the support staff out of our own pocket based on the original total of your bill.

    If you get your meal free, we still have to ring the food up. It doesn’t matter that you’ve gotten a free meal card from the manager at an earlier date, you still screw us when you leave us nothing because of the above reasons.

    Techincally your employer is on the hook to ensure that you recieve whatever the standard minimum wage is for your state/province. If the tips from your credit receipts don’t add to your sub-minimum wage to meet or exceed the legislated minimum they have to make it right. Keep your checks.

    Tips are unethical. As she shows on the check, tips justify a low wage.
    When I enter a restaurant I expect to pay the price on the menu. If the deal is that I have to pay extra for the food being taken to the table, I want it clearly expressed on the menu or a sign. Then, I have the choice to go eat somewhere else.
    You can’t demand payment for a service that you don’t have a contract for. If the contract is that I can pay whatever I want, don’t complain if I don’t pay at all. If you want me to pay for your service, open your mouth and say so before serving me. Most likely I’ll go eat somewhere else but that’s my privilege. It’s not my fault that the system is screwed. If you don’t get paid enough to serve me, don’t. Go get another job.
    That’s what I do, I make a living without tips. If I can, you can.

      You know that when you walk into a resteraunt with a server that a tip is expected and that otherwise it would not be “a litle extra”, it would be a lot. Don’t act as though this is a new concept, and you don’t know that. That’s why on the credit card bill there is a place for tips. If you don’t want to pay for your service open your mouth and say so before they serve you. I bet you don’t do that. Most likely you will eat somewhere else from then on, because I promise you won’t like the way you get treated. It’s not my fault we have to pay rent and the system is screwed up but I will pay attention to someone else’s needs before yours. Go find another place to eat. That’s what I do, I eat places I can afford without wasting someone’s time and money. If I can, you can.

      State laws vary, federal law does not. Minimum wage is a federal law.

    I posted because I had a general inquiry as to what current industry standards were so that I could have a better understanding of what entails a servers wages. This topic was posted a long time ago, with many replies, none of which definitively answered my question.
    Thank you for the education, but the name calling really was unnecessary.

    It is odd that the “great” Ronald Reagan, who had the “largest tax cut in history” and wanted to get “Big Government off our backs” actually signed the bill that contained this tip taxing language. The bill did, however, increase the tax businesses paid on business meals, the so-called “Three Martini Lunch”. Instead of writing-off the entire cost, these poor rich bastards could only write-off half the total bill.

    All in all, the legislatin signed by Reagan was the largest tax increase in history, at that time.

    Here’s a tip for tippers.

    First, I always tip at least 10 to 15% for breakfast, 15 to 18% for lunch and 18 to 20% for dinner. Even if the service is bad. I have rotten days, too!

    Second, I always tip in cash. Even if I pay the bill on credit, I draw a big fat zero with a slash on it where you write in the tip amount.

    As far as the IRS is concerned, must be a rotten waiter.

    This doesn’t always work, depending on how the employer asses tips. But, it NEVER hurts!!
