In NZ we never tip. I can't imagine paying extra money on top of the food cost, what a stupid system!

75% of servers out there aren't worth 10%. Seriously. You carry plates of food to my table, and you feel this is worth 20%? How about I get it from the pass-thru myself next time, at least then it'll be warm.

I tip based on the final cost of my soft drink. If a server refills my drink enough times, to where it averages only 40 cents a glass, I tip 20%. If an establishment offers free refills, and I get only 1, then I give 10%. If there are no free refills, I drink water.

As a former restaurant manager I can assure you that servers are not people who can't get any other job. It takes incredible skill to serve well and many people are not able to master it.

I never base my tip on the food prices entirely because the breakfast server in a local cafe where I often eat breakfast (juice,2 eggs, potatoes, bacon AND toast) can be had for $5 because she works just as hard as a server in a fancy dinner restaurant where an entree is $60. She will get at least 100% as a tip less than $5 would embarass me. If she's good I may "round up" the check to $20 and her tip is 300%. If the $60 entree server is lousy, she'll get the same $5. Even if she's stellar, she won't get 300%. IF she really is that good, she'll get the same $15 the other server got.

If my tip totals less than $5, I always explain why to the server so she can make better tips.

And as to stiffing her costing her--it sure as hell does. Maybe you think that making sure she gets minimum wage is adequate but every good server I know is making $25-$40/hr so they all pay taxes on 10% of your check even if you give them $0.

As to the sign? I don't know. I feel someone should make sure people know that times are different than they were 70 yrs ago and tipping is no longer at all optional in restaurants, but it seems, somehow, wrong.

Many people have told me this. If you can't afford to eat out, you can't afford to tip.

Plus eating at home is cheaper and better for you! :) You'd be shocked at the amount of salt in restaurant food.

In Ontario, minimum general wage is around 8.75/hr. Servers are around the 7.50 mark. Maybe it's more now. Sundays to Thursdays rake in $30 to $60 a night + $30+ in wages, depending on how well you do your job and what time you start. Fridays and Saturdays are in the $50 to $100+ range.

I tip 10% for mediocre service, 12% for good service, 15% for great service and 17%+ for excellent service. We're people too!

I completely agree! There's no reason to bitch, the next time well make up for it.

For example, on Sat. night I barely made 60$ for a 6 hr. closing shift, but on Sunday night (generally a slow night) I made over 100$!

No use complaining, it will just bleed over to your job and make it worse. Brush it off and keep smiling!

You actually have to have more training to work in a fine restaurant and oft times go to tastings and classes to learn about wine pairings, etc. You get tipped more because the restaurant won't just hire anybody off the street, it can be really hard to get a job in these places. Benefits? Higher pay.

I have seen too many waiters like this. And they grumble about every table and then grumble after their table leaves about their tip. I wonder why? There are oft times when I suspect, generally by someone's attitude, that I will not get tipped or not tipped well at least; however I refuse to treat people poorly because of it and oft times am surprised. If they do tip me poorly I want them to feel guilty about it later and not be able to rationalize it.

Mistakes can be made, waiters can get distracted or busy and things get overlooked. Sometimes we even realize this. I generally try to communicate that to my table if I know I did not do as much as I would like to my table, but others may not know how to. So, please remember not all are doing it on purpose nor consistently. If it's not an attitude problem, or a waiter ignoring you, I attempt to sympathize. Maybe look around every once in a while see if they're being lazy and chatting in a corner or running around from table to table.

It's very recently changed to 20%, at least here in AR, though it may have done so quicker else where. I don't dislike people who tip 15% b/c that is true but generally I get 20%. Listen if I sell 300 I still don't even make 6o b/c of tipouts, so really let's not act as though waiters are overpaid.

No one's going to give you the stinkeye for 15%, but yes, tipping practices change.

Just so you know, I'm a waiter and at least 15% of the waiters have a college degree in all fields, business, English, nursing, biology, etc. and another 25% are in school. More than those are single mothers, including two widows who have to have flexible hours in order to take care of their children.

Choices are usually limited when you need a flexible schedule. I also know more than one waitress that has a MFA or MA. So please, don't be so condescending about "qualifications".

And btw, few people would treat bank tellers the way they feel they can treat servers.

I agree with your own preferences when dining out, but many others have different preferences, including small chat, etc. And guess what? People expect you to know somehow what exactly they want and then tip you on that. And guess what else? Waiters remember bad tippers.

Also, I have seen many, many, many people fail at waiting tables. Including MBAs.
