the audacity of theft

June 6th, 2008 · 150 comments

writes an anonymous submitter in houston: “a neighbor in my building put up an obama yard sign on the door of her apartment around the time of the texas primary. when it disappeared, i assumed she took it down herself.” then up went this note — a cheerful bit of propaganda that oh-so-subtly disproves all those ugly stereotypes about “self-righteous obama supporters” with a colorful blaze of moralistic tsk-tsking and first-amendment flag-waving. (woo! obama ‘08!)

Crazy election pranks just make me want to vote for Ralph Nader.
He’s the biggest election prick prank of all time!

It says in the description that the note itself is propaganda.

    how is the note propaganda?

It would be propagandist if the Obama placard was not actually stolen. If the sign replaced the placard simply to leave the impression that Obama’s message was being unfairly censored, for example.
Not that I would ever accuse anyone of such shenanigans during an election cycle!

Hey, I was here first! (Not to this note, per se, but I’m somewhat regular on this site.) And I refuse to change my behavior just to avoid the confusion caused when someone else with a very common first name comes here! (I’m lazy, okay.) It’s my first-amendment right! (Obama 08!)

“Expresion.” That’s the only mistake I find in a 15-second perusal of the sign. Oh, that and THE CAPITAL LETTERS which in this case are pretty well-placed, actually.

Should it be a lease “provision” which “prohibits”?

No joke, just an honest question.

      Jun 6, 2008 at 4:37 pm   rating: +1

    • #4.3  Joe

No. That is generally used when the phrase is critical to the statement; no comma is used. E.g., I drive the car that is blue.

Which is used for additional information; a comma is generally used. E.g., I drive a car, which is blue.

Oh, wait. Are you asking about prevents/prohibits? I agree, prohibits is better in this case, but I don’t know that prevents is wrong, just inexact. Clauses may prohibit actions, but they can’t actually prevent them.

      Jun 6, 2008 at 4:44 pm   rating: +5

    • #4.4  Canthz_B

      Clauses cannot prevent actions either.

When people say they would be, “more than happy” to do something differently than what they just did, they are lying. If doing it that way makes them “more than happy”, why didn’t they do it that way in the first place?

In my experience, people who say that they will be “more than happy” aren’t even close to being happy, and are, in fact, headed in the wrong direction.

I haven’t heard the word “tacky” outside of a fashion/clothing context in a long time. It’s got a sort of Dear Abby/Mrs. Howell ring to it.

    Typically, the construct goes:

Not only (strong argument), but also (much stronger argument).

Stealing is not only illegal, it’s down right tacky.

Therefore, tackiness >> violation of statutes.

Ummm anyone mind explaining how this note is:
    a) propaganda
    b) contains a boatload of not so subtle obama supporter bashing that really doesn’t make sense?

Just a little confused. Not used to seeing non-passive aggressive notes posted just so the author of the site could get in some badly placed political snark.

      a) Propaganda? I’m not seeing it either.

      b) Oh, come on. The sarcasm in the intro statement is self-evident. The point is that the author of the note comes off exactly how the stereotype dictates: the “self-righteous,” “moralistic tsk-tsking and first-ammendment” appeals.

I think the “please return it to me” is a bit whiny and PA’ish. “I think you’re a tacky bad person, but please do me a favor and return it to me.”

As if the person who took it has kept it. I’m sure it is in a dumpster by now.

And what makes this person think it was a Hillary supporter or Republican? The poor Green, Libertarian, and other 3rd parties never get any credit. :(

Yes, we can steal your sign; yes we can seize your propaganda. As we leave your front yard with a new wind at our backs and we take this journey across neighborhoods, a place we trespass, with your message we carry from the lime green walls of San Rafael, to the watery pods of Kansas, the same sign you had when we were up and when we were down, that out of many, we stole your one; that while we breathe, we will steal.
