Another Louisianian here…
I had a Memaw but I don’t know what her husband was called because he died when I was very young. Also Mimi & Pawpaw, Grandma & Grandpa, Ma & Papa, and Nanna.

I’m from California… The one consistent thing around here is that kids all switch to “Dad” and “Mom” around the fourth grade, as daddy/mommy are seen as infantile. (I was shocked the first time an online friend called her mother “mommy” and assumed it was from an unpleasant maturity disorder!)

I called my great&grand-fathers Papa [firstname]. I knew my paternal grandmother as “Bum-bum” for the sound she made while bouncing me on her kne My maternal great-grandmother was Nonna (“naw-nuh”) as she was first generation Italian-American & spoke English as a second language.

I don’t think what I used was representative of my region at all, though, as my cousins went with grandpa/grandma and I was a fairly classic autistic kid. )

I’m also from Louisiana, and my dad’s parents are known as Nana and PawPaw, my mom’s mom is Grammy, and my mom’s dad and his wife are Mimi and Poppi. All of my mom’s side of the family are from up north, though, and they use weird names for grandparents, too.

Expanding on the multiple grandparents theory… I am lucky enough to have had both maternal and paternal grandparents as well as both of my parents mother’s mother (and one’s father) alive in my lifetime.

We had to get creative with names… I have a Granny, Grandma, Nanny & Mamaw. As for grandfathers… much less creative… All three were called Papaw…

“Grammar Police”?–Are those the police who arrest Grammars who “do” their grandsons and then make them feel guilty about it? Maybe that’s what she meant by “when I’m gone”– as in to the Pokey!

I’m in Texas and “Mawmaw” and “Pawpaw” is what I’d call my mother’s parents (also in Texas). “Gramma” and “Granpa” are my father’s parents (not in Texas).
