When Internet memes go wrong IRL

June 24th, 2009 · 115 comments

Spotted by Ressa’s brother during his travels through America…

(This is one of those where the passive-aggressive part isn’t the note itself.)

Please do you not put anything on my cat anymore! Shadow is a little black short-haired cat. Someone keeps tying green plastic around his neck! He will only remove it later! We have put several collars on Shadow, but he loses them. And I do not want him to get caught on something and not be able to get himself free. Shadow lives at 14 Darrell Place. He's really friendly and won't hurt you, so please be nice to him! Thanks

Not isn’t passive aggressive. It’s not overtly aggressive. It’s not sarcastic, mean, funny, etc. It’s not even a lolcat! If anything, it’s a perfectly reasonable request by a cat owner trying to protect her cat.

That’s hardly the point, Joel, as Kerry clearly explains in her essential WTF section.

I also disagree with your assertion that this note is a perfectly reasonable request. The second grade penmanship is worth mocking and the note is just a bit too long. I also take issue with the exclamation marks (or points) as they are capable of turning any note into a passive-aggressive missive.

Now, let’s stop splitting hairs and get back to the funny. There’s got to be a joke in here about a pussy casting a shadow.

My cat lives at my house, but gets to go outside whenever she wants. Sometimes she’ll stay out all night. I used to wonder what she did on those overnight adventures but not too long ago I discovered that she simply sleeps in the glider on the back patio.

I’ve been lectured by people who insist cats must stay indoors but my cat is 14 years old and in great health. More than I can say for the morbidly obese cats my neighbors have.

I don’t think the owners (as if anybody can own a cat) are irresponsible. Just stupid, for posting this note.

I think the logic is that the cat can be subjected to dangers not present in the home (vehicles, stupid humans wielding green plastic), as well as a variety of weird animal diseases and weather-related issues.

My cat stays inside and she seems to be a perfectly happy and healthy animal. While I’m not going to preach to those that let their cats stay out, I personally don’t prefer to do so.

I would appreciate it if those outside cats would quit using my flower bed as their toilet.

The next time Shadow comes over here for that purpose, he may never go back home.

      In Norway? In NORWAY?!

Yes, Norway and the USA are so similar in geography, custom and rhythm of life that pet keeping practices should be the same in each country.

Oh, you’re totally right. With all the icebears roaming the streets here, it’s indeed a more dangerous country :)

Perhaps, a bit of common sense. Of the 4 cats I own- 2 are indoor/outdoor, 2 are not…The two that stay in 24/7 are a Munchkin (natural) and a Oversized grey who couldn’t get out of a dogs way let alone up a tree. But of course, I live in the country… Thebirds are safe, the possums and such, not so much.

@susannie: I never saw icebears in Norway, unless “icebear” is Norwegian code for “naked guy running from the public sauna to the freezing lake”.

@mamarilla2: yes, common sense; that’s the ticket!

There’s nothing cruel, unethical, or neglectful about allowing cats to roam outside, as long as you are sure that the area around your home is reasonably safe for them (no major roads, overly aggressive dogs, green plastic wielders, etc.).

While an indoor cat can certainly lead a satisfying life, it’s in a cat’s nature to enjoy exploring a more natural setting. Allowing cats to go outside for a few hours a day can give them the best of both worlds, and can help keep them healthy, happy, and active.

I live with three cats, and while one of them prefers to stay inside, the other two enjoy their time outdoors very much and complain quite a bit whenever they aren’t allowed out.

Outdoor cats have much shorter lives, (as well as contracting more illnesses and parasites) so I keep my cats indoors.

Not necessarily so, I had an outdoor cat who live to be 18yrs old. She hated being indoors all the time in fact she went so neurotic when I moved to a flat and tried to make her into an indoor cat that we ended up re-homing her with my ex-neighbour and she continued to be an outdoor cat for the rest of her life!

I think it all depends on the traffic flow.

True, I lived on a street with minimal traffic and no dogs so she was pretty safe and she mostly liked to stay in the garden to keep a hopeful eye on the bird table. Outdoor cats in cities are pretty much a no-no.

This seems to have turned into a discussion on proper pet ownership behaviors, so I’ll throw my two cents in.

To be fair, the argument about whether or not it’s right to allow a cat outside depends greatly on where someone lives. I have owned cats all my life. When I lived out in a rural subdivision, my cats were allowed outside. I should state for the record that they were all spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations, which is important if you’re going to let your cats out. When I moved into a different area, with much more traffic and such, my cats were strictly indoor only. That’s not to say that bad things can’t happen to indoor/outdoor cats in a rural setting, because sadly they can, but the risk is not as great as for a cat living in the middle of, say, a big city. Let me also say that I am firmly against the idea of “outdoor only” cats.

It doesn’t say anywhere, that I can see, where this note was found. Therefore, we can’t automatically assume that the owner is irresponsible for letting her (guessing from the handwriting) cat outside. That’s not the issue anyway. If someone was tying stuff around my cat’s neck, I’d be annoyed too.

One more thing: People have commented that the note looks childish. Well who’s to say that it wasn’t a child or a teenager who wrote it? It could very well be that Shadow belongs to a seemingly very reasonable and polite young girl, who is simply concerned for her cat’s comfort and safety.

I may come across as too serious or a jerk or whatever, but I’m just trying to present it from a fellow pet owner’s perspective.

If the passive-aggressive act isn’t the note itself, what is it?

Is it the fact we are all bitching about it anyway, therefore creating a whole ironic circle of passive-aggression?

Health of the cat aside, it’s better for everybody else if the cat stays in. Cat feces transmit all kinds of parasites, and they just love sandboxes. Picture your oral-fixated toddler finding one of those delightful Kitty Rocas. And cats do kill a lot of small animals, particularly songbirds. There’s nothing sadder than finding a little pile of warbler feathers on your lawn.

I mean really, are you happier with the feces of other wildlife in your kid’s sandbox? You think because your lawn is green it is animal excrement free?

      Think…it ain’t illegal yet.
