Haha, I live in Provo. Lots of people don’t follow BYU’s incredibly strict housing rules, even the devout Mormons (I am one.) I spent the night at my now-husband’s apartment multiple times and we didn’t do anything against the BYU honor code – just watched TV and fell asleep on the couch. The note-writer is jumping to conclusions.

Sorry for joining in this conversation after its end, but I felt it necessary to point out an oversight. Canthz_B, the reason Autumn did not understand the redundancy joke you made regarding her comment was not because of her ignorance, but rather because you misread her comment to begin with. You see, Autumn’s comment was in protest of “pre-martial sex before marriage,” not “pre-marital sex before marriage.” It’s sex before fighting before marriage that she opposes–and I rather admire her stance against domestic abuse.

So true. Typical Provo and typical SLC are vastly different. And I’ve been the recipient of many a passive-aggressive note from roommates who are terrified that THEY will be expelled from the university because *I* had a boy in our (gasp!) living room until (gasp!) midnight. (gasp!) I think it’s worth noting, however, that BYU’s 30,000 students are all learning how to narc on each other. (Also: I know exactly which apartments these are – my close friends lived there. It was a shithole.)

A little bit more background — this note is actually not so much “typical Utah” as it is “typical Provo”. Specifically, it’s “typical BYU-approved student housing in Provo”, and very much so. There are a number of apartment complexes in Provo that are privately owned, but in order to be have the status of “approved” BYU housing have to enforce/abide by BYU’s draconian and absurd “Honor Code”. If someone turns you in for violating said code, you can be in big trouble by the BYU secret police, aka the honor code office. People are expected to “turn in” gratuitous violators in their own apartment or building; not doing so may even be a violation of the code. It’s extreme and shocking, even for many Mormons. Sleeping overnight in a boy’s apartment is a big time no-no for a girl on the honor code. My older brother once lived in one of these apartment complexes, and although he and his roommates were *not* BYU students, they were threatened with eviction because they had a coffee maker (!!!!) in their kitchen — I shit you not. The complex owners are terrified of losing their precious “BYU approved student housing” status, because that’s their bread and butter.

Bottom line: don’t think that this is what living in Utah is like; but living in Provo, especially in student housing, is definitely like this — this note rings SO TRUE. Salt Lake City, on the other hand, is actually a surprisingly liberal place — politically, a distinct patch of bright blue (along with Park City) in a vast sea of red, and culturally a pretty cool place to live. The University of Utah is like the anti-BYU.
