I also had a really solid trash can stolen in NJ.
Talk about being shocked and amazed? Of all things to steal? A garbage can? Who fences these things? What do they go for on the black market?

I now think that if something has wheels, and is not chained in place, it should be equipped with LoJack.

I live in San Diego. Those cans cost about a hundred bucks to get replaced from the city. Can’t use anything else either. Follow the money.

Launguagegeek, you forgot about all of the forms you have to fill out to even THINK about replacing that door handle. =) I actually work for an HOA Management Company in San Diego…so sue me but it’s the highlight of my day to mail out all of the violation letters for infractions like this.

Leaving your garbage and/or recycling container out after collection is considered a major taboo and usually subject to monetary penalties if it is not placed inside of the garage by midnight after collection. Most of my homeowners would have called up screaming if this was in my HOA.

Also, garbage can can be expensive to replace in S.D., especially if you have to get them from the City, I’ve seen them be as much as $90.

Usually, on days when my upstairs neighbours or I forget to promptly remove our garbage can some local pet-owner decides to grace it with little baggies of dog excrement (it’s happened twice).

I considered taking a picture to send in here but, although it is definitely passive aggressive, I thought it might be pushing the boundaries of the word “note”

I have had to go 3 houses down to retrieve my can.
I don’t know what I did to tick off the trash guys, but everyone else on the street finds their cans upright and next to the curb.
Mine, however, are always on their side, and either in the middle of the street or 2-3 houses up or down the street.
(the old guy across the street has started to give them grief, and lately it’s been left at one of my next door neighbors, so that’s a bit of an improvement)

I wanna say the person who thinks their garbage can was stolen is insane, but this actually happened to my friend. She is not said sign poster, we live in NJ, but someone stole her garbage cans. O O I’m pretty sure you can buy them in the dollar store. So, if you’re gonna steal something I say steal something with actual value. That doesn’t stink.
