Well, now wait a minute... I can actually see a point here: Jaywalke's point is basically to shoo trespassers away and if they continue to trespass, kill 'em. So this theory should also work on neighbors, right? My cat goes on your property. You come over on mine to tell me to get my cat. My cat goes back on your property. You come back over on mine to complain about my damn cat again. You shoot my cat. I shoot you. I can see how this could work out. :P

Seriously, you have the right to "shoo" trespassers, be they human, dog, cat, Jehovah's Witness, whatever... you DO NOT have the right to kill them

Exactly. I let my cat outside when I am at home, and spray her with water if she tries to jump the fence into other people's yards. She is indoors while no-one is home to keep an eye on her.

She also can't catch birds at all, doesn't understand how to do it (she just sits there meowing at them) possibly because she was indoors 100% of the time for the first 12 months of her life.

I don't think keeping pets indoors 100% of the time is kind or healthy, which is why I let her out supervised.

I just hope this is enough to keep her away from the attention of those who seem to jump at any excuse to cause harm to another sentient creature.

So one side of this opinion seems to be: it's ok to keep cats inside as long as you live in a big city or live in an apartment.
But it's not ok to keep them inside if you live in a more rural area or you live in a house with a yard.
The argument is that it's cruel.
The logical conclusion IS - your opinion would make more sense if you said that cats should not be kept inside 24/7, therefore people that live in big cities or apartments should not own cats.
In a nutshell:

Sex is more fun than logic -- one cannot prove this, but it "is" in the same sense that Mount Everest "is", or that Alma Cogan "isn't".

Goodnight.

Cats hate wearing the same thing day in and day out. I'm not surprized the cat changed collars.
There's only so much ribbing a tabby can take from the gang in the alley you know.

Besides, what stylish cat would be caught dead wearing green after Labor Day?

Sarah,

It may be rare, but it's not unique.
Our girl cat (the more friendly of our two) got scooped up
one afternoon by a 2nd grade girl about 6 houses down.
She hid the collar under her pillow, and might have managed
to keep her except that:
1) her mother only let her keep the cat overnight and outside, and,
2) her 7th grade sister found the collar, put it together with our
Missing Cat signs posted up and down the block, and called to tell us
that her sister 'probably' had had Tippy the night before.

We found her that evening on their roof, brought her back down the long block, and even managed to give out candy on Halloween that year.

Okay, I had to comment on this one;

I have a cat named Jack that I adopted from the MSPCA last year. When he adjusted to his new home, I allowed him to be an outdoor cat since my neighborhood is relatively quiet.

He usually only stayed outside during the day, but as the summer wore on he started to disappear for days at a time. I became concerned, and, after getting him several of those break-away cat collars that he snapped out of in seconds, I purchased a dark green, personalized collar that had his full name embroidered on it in white, with an actual buckle that he couldn't rip off (he also has a microchip).

WELL ... one night, after coming home from work, he came racing up the driveway to greet me -- wearing a plain, bright red collar!!!!!!! What crazy person does that?! The collar that I bought him could only come off if a human unbuckled it, so someone took it off and put their own collar on MY cat!

Needless to say, I've never let him out of the house since that night...
