Lisa from Toronto doesn’t try to hide the fact that this note was, uh, not exactly undeserved. “On a long weekend in Grand Bend, my boyfriend squeezed into a parking spot which partially placed his front tires on the edge of someone’s lawn,” she says. But if Lisa and her bf lost any sleep over their vehicular faux pas — and I’m guessing they didn’t — it seems like this note, which Lisa called “amazing,” would more than make up for it. Okay!

  It’s defamiliarization. The author creates a gap between the horizon of the text and the horizon of the reader. Presumably the form of this note is a parodic response to the parking. Consider how the one caricatures the careless disorganization of the other.

  Most of the Asian folks I’ve worked with over the years have had the most beautiful handwriting. Might have something to do with the calligraphy needed to draw the Kanji characters.

  I totally agree… It was a english speaker who wrote this and for some reason thought the park-ee was Asian. Maybe they live in a neighborhood taken over by Asians. I had that experience living in NYC for a time… I’d get pissed at stupid stuff too.

  Grand Bend is a tiny “beach resort” town on the shore of Lake Huron. It’s over a three hour drive from Toronto and I’ve only ever seen white people living there.
  
  My guess? An English speaker wrote the note assuming that they were Asian either from seeing them, or because they have some type of tag that identifies their vehicle as being from Toronto.

Actually, this reads like someone who only uses American Sign Language wrote the note. The syntax is very typical of how ASL works. The annoyed party may very well be Deaf.

  Not ALL deaf people do, but as someone who’s had to decipher notes between my deaf sister and her friends, I can testify that a lot of deaf people actually do. Due to the emphasis put on phonics-based teaching, a lot of deaf students have trouble reading and writing non-ASL syntax English.

  This is likely. Deaf people who use ASL do often write differently, often not using verb tenses, articles, etc. ASL is not the same as speaking English. Example:

I second what Hawley said. People in Toronto love the Chinese-can’t-drive stereotype to death. It’s a long running joke. This was probably a fake written by a bored 19 year old. In reality, the new immigrant Asians don’t use ‘okay’ often in their speech, and wouldn’t care to use it in writing.

Though as someone who has resided in a neighborhood with many minorities of this descent, I have to agree that there are plenty of new immigrants who have no sense of courtesy on the roads.

  I am a dispatcher who has spent the last 15 years dealing with drivers that speak English as a second language. I communicate with them and read their writing for 10 hours a day. Yes, I think you can take me as an expert on foreigners’ misspelled words. Anyone with grammer this bad would have misspelled at least a few words on this note.

  I don’t know if the lack of misspelled words should decide if it is a fake or not. I mean, the writer probably stewed over the parked car for a while, considering it being a “long weekend.” I bet the note came out of the car being there for longer than expected, giving time to look up the correct spellings.
  
  I’ve studied some French and am by no means capable of decent grammar but I know how to go look up spellings.
  
  Spelling is easy, grammar isn’t.
