Sorry, but this thread failed waaay back in #17.8 when Canthz_B brought up Godwin's law. Danielle wins by default. Oh why oh why is there no way to block people that post too much?

Actually, severe snowstorms represent a net loss for most restaurants (though some places can make that up after the storm ends with people who have power outages). The 7 or so people who show up won't pay enough to turn the lights on, never mind justify making Rick work overtime because no one else comes in.

The ONLY reason these places stay open is because they want to be known as open all the time in all weather.

"than you do at trying to teach stupid people to stop being stupid." I do not agree with this sentence in this instance but I do agree with it in the general sense. Danielle thinks that if she convinces the random people reading this blog that the customers go to her store specifically to harass her (and not because her store sells stuff that people need) then magically people stop coming to her store.
I think it is pretty clear who is stupid here. The customers who patronize the ALREADY OPEN shops or the employee who is bent on convincing random people that people risk their life just to make her life hell. On internet.

Tvelociraptor, you can try a mom-and-pop store instead of a corporate-managed store. Of course, you won't get any benefits, but you will probably be treated better.

I know a lot of places around my town (not too far from Salem) were closed due to this storm. Rick just wanted to be among them. I was also working. I can sympathize. Hopefully he's saving up to pay for some sort of schooling.

Team "Find out the law, and whether Corporate is breaking it or not".

As others pointed out, if state and local governments have declared a state of emergency, then even "Widgets-R-Us" should have to obey the relevant laws.

Perhaps "stay off roads during a state of emergency" is more of a guideline than a requirement in your state. If that is true, than Corporate is legally in the right. Your beef is with the law, not Corporate. Work to get the law changed.

Perhaps "stay off roads during a state of emergency" is already a legal requirement. If so, Corporate is breaking the law. Your choice is then to either politely bring that fact to their attention, or to go to the legal authorities to report the violation.

I suspect the Corporation is skanky, since they don't apparently value the lives and safety of their employees. I'd do my best to find another job.

Customers who intentionally disregard state of emergency warnings are likely not the brightest bulbs (unless the state overuses the warning).
But blaming them for your problem seems silly to me. I think you'd have much better chance getting the law enhanced (if life and limb are truly at stake), or enforced (by changing company policy and/or bringing suit against the company) than you do at trying to teach stupid people to stop being stupid.

The reason you can't leave isn't because of people coming into the store. The reason you can't leave is because your manager is an a-hole. Seriously.

I worked in plenty of retail jobs. In most of those jobs, if the weather was that awful, they closed the store, whether people were still coming in the door or not. And for the folks already in the store, they got "sorry, we're closing due to weather," and then they were herded out the door.

In fact, the only place I ever worked that didn't ever shutdown was a 24 hr convenience store. No big surprise there.

aaww, hard shell, warm chewy center? :) btw, can't believe ya'll are still debating this down there. I think everyone may have to agree to disagree, bc this poor, dead horse is getting really beat. and despite my teasing, CB, I tend to agree with you. I work in service, and it is your job. The bosses make the rules, and if you get one that treats you like crap to benefit customers, you get a new one. Personally, if I thought it was too dangerous to drive, for real, I would just call and let my boss know I couldn't make it. Of course, I don't work for assholes, so I wouldn't get fired for it.
Dani, you lost me when you continued to whine and cry, and tried to make it sound like you work in East L.A. for crissakes.
back in the day, stores were all closed Sundays, holidays, and people would hear of a storm coming, and stock up bc the gd stores would be closed, so their employees could stay home. What changed that was the first greedy person who thought, "Hey, I can maybe make a few extra bucks by being the only store in town that stays open during this!!". So yes, it IS your boss. Customers would learn to make due the same way they used to before they were given options.

I've been in retail for 7 years, part of high school and now as I further my education. I've moved around company to company. Customer like the ones I've talked about don't happen all at once or at one location. They do however exist. I have friends who bar tend and have been attacked because the customer didn't like their drink. Things can happen in any line of work. Mostly customers are kind. You get about 1 or 2 a day that yell and scream about the return policy and we do what we can to make them happy. Most people understand that I don't make the clothes or the rules and don't take it out on me. However think about when you are out shopping and you've seen customers get mad at cashiers, it happens. Some times it just gets out of controll, but that's once in a blue moon. We as retail/service workers just have to put a smile on our faxes and push on. Talk to some of the retail workers in your lives, they will have tons of stories of customers losing their minds. It comes with the job no matter what location you work in. So I don't have any issues, but thanks for the concern.

My store is in a mall too...if our department stores close, we have the option of closing as well. The department store run on the same idea we do, no customers then close, even 3 customers and we all have to stay open.
