Nope, it’s not just a West Coast thing — you can has exemplary higher education all over the country!

To wit: Marybeth spotted this totally [sic] bulletin board at Central Connecticut State University back in 2006.

HOW IS YOUR EYES? My eyes? My eyes [is] great. Yours [is] not so great.

These eyes have seen a lot of love but they’re never gonna see another love like they have in you.

    Thanks for asking

Unfortunately, this is a valid Ebonics grammatical structure.

No, in Ebonics it would be “How yo’ eyes is, Man?”

I feel your pain. Optometrists are members of a mysterious cabal.
Why does my prescription get stronger every year if they are doing me some good?

Ever notice that when you say you can see perfectly, they dial that lens back once and write you a prescription for that setting?

Seems wrong somehow, but I can’t put my finger on it…I can’t see that far, and they don’t give you back your glasses in time to catch them!

I’ve got a plan for them this year. My eye exam is this Thursday afternoon. When I get to my “perfect” setting, I’m going to let them move forward one more and call that perfect. When they dial back one, I’ll have what I like!

Score one for the blind (or soon to be blind) guy!!

There’s too much pressure at the eye doctor. By the time they switch to two, I’ve forgotten what one looks like, and I’m always trying to figure out which one they want me to say, like it’s a test I’m getting wrong.

isn’t (aren’t) it possible that this is some art thing? looks like a wacky outside the box art school display. ‘ceci pas une pipe’ style? you’re meant to go “heyyyy, that’s clearly not right! woah, that MAKES ME THINK.”

  • #12   Who? Me?

So, does the bulletin board creator even feel dissed when they read the “My eyes?” crack? My guess is NO.

If they didn’t see anything wrong with “How is your eyes?”, why would they see anything wrong with “Yours [is] not so great” ? Are brackets *that* condemning, especially to someone who does not understand such basic conjugation?

I bet the BB creator just completely ignores the comment as the work of some smart-ass, and never even comprehends what it was trying to say.

So all in all, it’s a PA fail. Clever, in a cerebral way, but simply too passive to get the job done.

My intention wasn’t necessarily to correct it or even to shame the person. It was just a quiet nod to the people who’d walk by and read it and understand what I’d meant. ;)
