It’s my spot and I’ll park what I want to

Kate in Melbourne caught a glimpse of this note from the street, and it looked so ridiculous that she snuck into the private lot to get a closer look. Adds Kate: “I imagine this person is quite popular with the neighbours.”

DO NOT REMOVE. This is the property of unit 1. We pay rent for this carspace and shall therefore use it for whatever vehicle we want to. [crossed out scribbles]

(By the way, Kate apologizes for the poor resolution of the photos; she only had her mobile phone with her at the time.)

LOL, love the toy car – should have thought about that when we lived in a flat in Sydney and people would park in our parking space all the time because they thought we didn’t have a car (only one of us did). A bottle of Jif cleaner on an offending car’s windscreen seemed to fix the problem…

I think this is pretty awesome. I have had people take my space a million times just because it was open. If you pay for it, it’s yours. I actually had a neighbor ask if he could park his car in my spot while my car was in the shop because his tabs were expired. I didn’t mind and it was cool of him to ask.

Our house is on a corner, so my boyfriend and I have a space on both roads. We recently sold one car, because we don’t drive enough. Leaving a space, that was for visiters (but often empty).
Since I wasn’t using one of them (the one with the better view) one of our neighbors decided to park an ugly-ass old trailer in the spot with the hitch propped up on cinder blocks. Never asked us once if it was ok.

Why do people like this exist? :/
(and yes, we gleefully got the police to get them to move it, because polite requests were being ignored)

Team Toy Car. If they pay rent for it, it’s theirs. Better to be annoyed by a kid’s car in the parking space you want then to have to deal with your car being towed unexpectedly, right?

My kids each have one of those cars that they drive around my mom’s house. They freaking LOVE those cars!!! Since those cars have kept my kids happy its fair enough it gets a parking space.

I read somewhere that the Little Tikes cozy coupe was the top selling “car” in the USA. More of those cozy coupes than real vehicles.

I like it! We have a parking spot, but no car. But we live in an area with limited parking during certain events, so during those times we like to let our friends who may be visiting use it. Lately the person who parks next to our spot has decided that their little car is far to big to just park in their own, or they are far too lazy to park correctly, so they just use two spots now. I’ve been trying to think of a good way to combat this, as I have no idea what unit they are in to find them to ask. This might be a good way?

The problem with most sabatoge to cars is the victim knows right away when he gets to his car, and therefore, might know the person who did it.

The solution: Motor oil on the wiper blades.

They very likely wont notice till they are both (1) days away and (2) a distance away from the scene of the crime.

Thumb tacks on the ground inside the lines of your parking bay; a sign saying “Beware! Thumb Tacks! Park here like a massive douche bag at your own risk.” should absolve you of any legal ramifications.

That’s what I was thinking too. Yeah, they’re in the right. But….. It’s hardly neighborly. They could stand to be a little less uptight about this. Maybe lend the space to the next door neighbor, on the condition they park elsewhere if you need it for a visitor or something.

My previous home had one assigned space per townhome. The other spots were reserved for homeowners, but not assigned per home. Then there were the very rare visitor spots. The end result is that it was difficult to find a spot at all if you came home late from work on a weekday. I tell ya, if someone had parked a toy car in their reserved spot on a more or less permanent basis, and I’m wandering the whole neighbhorhood looking for a space – any space – I’m going to be upset, especially if I had to park at the nearby shopping center in desperation. Might not park in their space, but I’ll still be peeved. They’re totally in the right, but I would still grumble.

      So, right, but not *right*.

A reserved space is a reserved space, no matter what they have parked in it, The Elf. Your frustrations have nothing to do with how reserved that space will continue to be, even though you really really want to park in it.

It’s just…. not neighborly, assuming that they have little use of the space. There’s a difference.

Actually, in my lease we’re prohibited from parking/storing broken-down, derelict or unused vehicles in our assigned parking spots or even on the grounds. Parking and storage being totally different concepts.
I think it’s a quality of life issue in that case in management’s eyes. One I agree with.

Not saying anyone should park in the space you pay for, just that anything goes isn’t always the case either.
Why is it so hard for so many people to read their lease? I mean, it’s all in there somewhere. Just read the damned thing before signing it and live by the rules you’ve agreed to abide by.

Is that really so fucking hard to do?

Unfortunately whilst the toy car may not be ‘neighbourly,’ neither is the mile that is usually taken when an inch is given in these situations. Letting someone get away with transgressions which merely affect you is a choice – usually, I would let this slide for the sake of neighbourly harmony (eg. – the house next to ours is flats, the students in the top flat sit on their roof and the occasional drunken accident or thoughtlessness lands pizza crusts or fag butts on our property). Letting someone develop a pattern of actually occupying space you own/lease on the other hand is asking for trouble and can have potentially dangerous legal consequences.

Of course in situations like yours (Canthz_B) things are very different, but in terms of the submitter I’m going with the standard common law presumption that an owner or lessee of land has the right to do whatever he wants with it.

The crossed-out scribbles make me think that someone came along and wrote something like “F*** YOU” on the sign, and someone else crossed it out so the “children” wouldn’t see it.

To J. See: try printing out a “BAD PARK YOU!” sign and leaving it on their windshield a few days in a row, and see if they get the message.

Same here! Used to rent an apartment where neither of us had a car, but we would constantly have at least one driver over (we happened to be the most central for most friends), and they’d have to park on the street – and pay! – because random neighbours would yoink our spot.

Maybe it’s a stupid question, but if the tenants pay for a parking space, wouldn’t it make sense to paint the apartment number on the parking space? I live in a huge apartment complex and we all have a reserved parking space with our apartment number painted on the ground. If you don’t have a car then your space remains empty all the time but no one parks in it because you get towed.

      @Dibs
You are sooo lucky to live in a place where people actually respect designated parking spaces. I lived for 8 years in a condo where my parking space was not only numbered but also in front of my unit and my 2nd spot was always hijacked by visitors. I use to keep it for my own visitors because the visitor’s parking was always used by the third or fourth car of other tenants. If I had thought about this idea I would have sooo used it!

It looks like there are signs on the wall running behind the parking spaces. Those may have unit number/parking spot ownership info on them.

I am also on Team Toy Car. As someone who lives in a Downtown area with zoned parking (your area has a Zone Number and you get a sticker to park in the zone), I can relate to being someone with one car having to deal with households with 4 cars (and only two “sticker” spots are authorized – they abuse the Visitor Pass system for the other cars). I don’t care how annoyed people may get, that spot belongs to that unit and that’s apparently what they needed to do to keep people from getting comfortable with taking it.

In China, many of the private parking spaces have mini-barriers bolted to the ground that pop up to prevent other people from parking in that space. They come in both manual and electric remote control versions. From what I saw, they seem to work well.

I am so happy to see so many people who share this problem! Our parking space is included in our rent so technically we are paying for it. We don’t have a car and people park there all the time and it irks me so much!
It doesn’t matter if they are numbered if anything it just helps the neighbours remember what parking space number belongs to the people without a car.

If you don’t have a car, why be upset when people park in the space? I always say if I don’t need something right now, there’s no reason someone else can’t use it.

Once you do have a car, then you’ll have to explain that to them, but for now, it’s no harm, no foul on their part isn’t it?

Oh, we have this problem all the time. A point a lot of people are forgetting is that in most leases (like my husband’s and mine), you specifically sign an agreement that says you will only use your space, and that any visitor you have will only use the visitor spaces – if they get towed, its technically on you. So I’m all for team toy car, since i’ve had to have two cars towed.

I am with the others that if I am not using the space I own, I would not mind others using it. However they need to ask first and be respectful of the fact that when I have visitors that I will want them to vacate that space quickly. It is too much trouble to have to go door to door asking whose car is in my space every time I have a visitor coming over.

I am a bitch about parking so I made sure to always live places where I had my own driveway and parking spaces so I don’t have to get into it with others. I still had a lot of problems at my old rental duplex though because the idiot neighbors would park all out on the street and block my driveway. It is so frustrating to not even be able to get in and out of your own home easily!

@Zorin Just because I don’t have a car doesn’t mean I don’t use that space. We rent cars for a weekend here and there and our guests use that space. I also ride in to work with someone who comes over after work sometimes for a visit or dinner. If someone is parked there what am I supposed to do? Go door to door in my building to find out who is parked there? Call a towing company and wait for them to show up before my space, that I pay for, can be used?

Hi, for what it’s worth: I lived in an apartment complex that had non-designated spots – so there was no guarantee EVER that you would have a spot, let alone a spot anywhere near your unit.

I would have loved to have designated spots – and if your complex won’t help to enforce your spot, call a tow-company. They are illegally in your paid spot.

Crap. Gotta go both ways here:

    1) My rent covers my space, so no one has the right to decide when I may or may not need it anymore than they can barbecue on my patio if they notice I haven’t been using my grill very much lately.
If I didn’t have a car, it’s still mine for guest parking if nothing else.
Talk to me and I’ll consider subletting it to you.

    2) I don’t see a way to go both ways on this.

The unused parking space assigned to an unoccupied apartment is fair game!!
I know…I use one because my wife uses our assigned space. ;-)

One of the coolest things about my place of residence is that if you ask at the office they will give you a list of unoccupied apartments and which parking spaces are assigned to those units.
You can then use that space until the unit is rented, and then just go back to find the newest list of unoccupied apartments and the spaces assigned to them.

Sounds too much like easy, but it works.

Kudos to your complex for being flexible and accommodating, but I think this is a rarity. In places where this list is not accessible, people get used to thinking of ‘empty’ spaces as ‘available’ spaces, and they have no idea when this status changes. When I moved into my current place, there was a silver New Beetle that I found parked in my spot a few times, and I wound up writing a slightly PA note of my own. I’m sure they thought they were doing nothing wrong, but had I been a nastier person I could have had their car towed and involved the management, etc, etc.

Point is, just because it looks like a space is not being used, doesn’t mean it isn’t. <—- I'm pretty sure this could win an award for "Most Awkward Sentence Involving Multiple Negatives."

Oh man you must live in a sane complex then. My friends lived in the most nazi regime apartment complex. Each apartment only had 2 spaces they could use. They had larger parking lots you could use but that required walking really far. My friends had 4 drivers in one apartment so obviously parking was an issue nevermind that they had a lot of friends who visited.

I would visit them and park in empty apartment spaces because we knew no one was currently living there. Guess what!? Stupid complex security would come bitch me out and make me move even after I told them that place was empty! I was SO glad when they moved out of there.

Pix, you know when an apartment/space gets rented when you get a sticker on your car advising you to move it. Then you go back to the office for an updated list of un-rented spaces.

We also have a large number of spaces which are for visitors parking, so it’s not really all that inconvenient to not have an extra assigned space…just that visitors parking spaces are not covered in this Arizona sun.

What really happens is the new tenant drives up and you’re parked in their spot. They go to the office and say “Hey, someone is parked in my spot!”
The office then sends a guy around to put a warning sticker on your car informing you it will be towed if not moved by 10am the following morning.

I don’t think that rises to the level of “going to the effort” as much as just doing their jobs well. ;-)

It’s as much of a toy as most drivers’ cars.

A significant proportion of people have cars that are far too large and powerful for their needs and driving-skills. Anything unnecessary renders it a toy.

This space is of course, Private, however, cars on Public roads and land deny others the use of that Public Space, by enclosing Public Space, making it ‘private’. Just imagine the outrage of drivers if cyclists and pedestrians were to go around with a typical car-sized framework with signs saying ‘Private Keep Out’ on them. Well cars do exactly that. Just try and get into a car at a stop sign, in-order to use the Public Space that it encloses and tell us the response you got, if you live.

    See: ‘tragedy of the commons’.

I’m sorry, but superfluous features does not render something a toy.

      toy |toi|
      noun
1 an object for a child to play with, typically a model or miniature replica of something : [as adj. ] a toy car.
      • an object, esp. a gadget or machine, regarded as providing amusement for an adult : in 1914 the car was still a rich man’s toy.

Conspicuous consumption exists but Toyota Land Cruisers, though unnecessary, are not toys. People drive them to work and back. That’s not fun or entertaining. The extra features are just proof of ability to provide for one’s young with a high income.

Wouldn’t extra features render nearly all cars toys? I mean nobody needs a cassette deck, either, but most cars have at least that, if not many more features, standard. Power locks and windows FTW!

I’m the contributor. And I’m ridiculously happy to see my photos on PAN. I think I sent it in 2007! Actually I partly agree with this comment, I’m kind of on team car too, if only because this was hilarious. The thing is, that this car space was in an inner city university suburb in Melbourne (Carlton) where parking is a nightmare, and car ownership for residents is quite low because the area is right next to the CBD, and you can’t get parking permits from local government – so a lot of people have nowhere to keep a car. In this context renting your spare space to people studying at the uni, or neighbours without any spaces is really common –and in fact lot of students who live locally can only afford the rent on their inner city apartment because they sublet their car space. So I think if the neighbours had a problem it would be because the owner was ‘wasting’ a car space – instead of renting it, or making it clear that the toy car was reserving the space for guests. The other thing is that the dust on the car made it obvious that it wasn’t getting moved around (and holding a space for occasional use). I read this sign as saying something along the lines of – “I don’t own a car, and I know I could rent this out, but I’m going to park a toy car here instead, because it’s hilarious”. So yes, some people will be fans, and others will be pissed off. I don’t own a car either, so I think this note is amusing, the neighbours on the other hand… Maybe not so much.

Totally team toy car… I lived in a duplex once and both apartments had completely separate driveways/parking spots that we each paid for in our rent. No one in my apartment had a car,but we often had friends come over that would use our spot. The people that lived above us took it upon themselves to treat our parking space as their own, telling their friends to park there, etc. without consulting us. My roommate borrowed a patio set from her parents and we put it right in the middle of our driveway and only moved it to the side when we knew someone was coming over and would need it. If the note writer pays for that spot..they should use it as they see fit!

You get that impression because you are self-deluded. You are not nearly as intelligent as you believe yourself to be. Unfortunately for your case, you are not the first one here to read Hardin. But your attempt to synthesize an extension to support your own argument was poorly thought out, clumsily presented and almost completely out of context with the current topic of discussion. Further, your immediate jump to personal attacks when challenged leads us to one of two conclusions. Either you do not understand your own arguments well enough to hold a logical discussion. Or, worse yet in this forum, you lack any understanding of proper public discourse. So, while it may make you feel better to assume we are incapable of understanding your superior intellect, the reality is that the issues lie (or is it lay? I never can remember) between your ears. That was evident with your first post.

Team Toy Car all the way. If they pay for it, they can use it any way they want. No different than if they travel for their job… their apartment might be empty a lot, but it wouldn’t give someone the right to move into it just because they wanted it and it was unused at that moment.

At our apartmentcomplex they have signs at the front of the parkingspaces saying RESERVED and then a sign with the licenseplate below it, any car parked in it that does not match the plate gets towed instantly, there are also people who own 2 cars that have 2 plates below it and its just 1st come first served for them, not ideal if you dont have a car and get a lot of visitors but it does make sure people don’t park there. Also all the other parking spots have a 2 hour limit on them, if you stay in it for longer then the allotted time you also get towed.

I can see this from both sides of the coin. On one hand, if other people are taking your reserved spot, that’s a pain in the ass.

On the flip side, if you don’t own a car and there’s limited parking – don’t be a dick, rent out the space to someone who needs it. And a lot of complexes don’t allow anything but an actual vehicle in the spots – junk and old cars aren’t allowed.
