I can see this from both sides of the coin. On one hand, if other people are taking your reserved spot, that’s a pain in the ass.

On the flip side, if you don’t own a car and there’s limited parking – don’t be a dick, rent out the space to someone who needs it. And a lot of complexes don’t allow anything but an actual vehicle in the spots – junk and old cars aren’t allowed.

At our apartmentcomplex they have signs at the front of the parkingspaces saying RESERVED and then a sign with the licenseplate below it, any car parked in it that does not match the plate gets towed instantly, there are also people who own 2 cars that have 2 plates below it and its just 1st come first served for them, not ideal if you dont have a car and get a lot of visitors but it does make sure people don’t park there. Also all the other parking spots have a 2 hour limit on them, if you stay in it for longer then the allotted time you also get towed.

I’m on toycar’s side. I suppose it’s normal to notice that a space is regularly unused – but then you go and ASK to pay for use of the space if you want to park there.

Our house is on a corner, so my boyfriend and I have a space on both roads. We recently sold one car, because we don’t drive enough. Leaving a space, that was for visiters (but often empty).
Since I wasn’t using one of them (the one with the better view) one of our neighbors decided to park an ugly-ass old trailer in the spot with the hitch propped up on cinder blocks. Never asked us once if it was ok.

Why do people like this exist? :/
(and yes, we gleefully got the police to get them to move it, because polite requests were being ignored)

Team Toy Car all the way. If they pay for it, they can use it any way they want. No different than if they travel for their job… their apartment might be empty a lot, but it wouldn’t give someone the right to move into it just because they wanted it and it was unused at that moment.

Unfortunately whilst the toy car may not be ‘neighbourly,’ neither is the mile that is usually taken when an inch is given in these situations. Letting someone get away with transgressions which merely affect you is a choice – usually, I would let this slide for the sake of neighbourly harmony (eg. – the house next to ours is flats, the students in the top flat sit on their roof and the occasional drunken accident or thoughtlessness lands pizza crusts or fag butts on our property). Letting someone develop a pattern of actually occupying space you own/lease on the other hand is asking for trouble and can have potentially dangerous legal consequences.

Of course in situations like yours (Canthz_B) things are very different, but in terms of the submitter I’m going with the standard common law presumption that an owner or lessee of land has the right to do whatever he wants with it.

You get that impression because you are self-deluded. You are not nearly as intelligent as you believe yourself to be. Unfortunately for your case, you are not the first one here to read Hardin. But your attempt to synthesize an extension to support your own argument was poorly thought out, clumsily presented and almost completely out of context with the current topic of discussion. Further, your immediate jump to personal attacks when challenged leads us to one of two conclusions. Either you do not understand your own arguments well enough to hold a logical discussion. Or, worse yet in this forum, you lack any understanding of proper public discourse. So, while it may make you feel better to assume we are incapable of understanding your superior intellect, the reality is that the issues lie (or is it lay? I never can remember) between your ears. That was evident with your first post.
