I know it’s an old list of comments, but I just wanted to ask how is someone expected to look up words in the dictionary if they cannot spell?

It would take a lot of reading to figure out how to spell tired or neighbor based on this student’s initial attempts.

Oh, and I don’t get the scented laundry detergent reference.

Kids tend to model their spelling on the examples of people around them. A nice neighbor would re-write her note for her, with proper spelling, as a model.

I just like the fact that while her spelling may be atrocious, she still grasps the ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’ rule when it comes to her attempt at “neighbors”.

That’s a good explanation gladystopia. I think part of the problem is technology. Kids are getting cell phones and using the internet at a younger age now, resulting in a lot of texting and netspeak. I used to think kids these days were a little stupid, but it’s more likely that they’re just lazy.

a loud neighbor is a loud neighbor sure, but if all this kid is saying is that the neighbors are “stomping” that’s as likely a product of the building and normal living noise as anything. I’ve lived below people, you hear them walking. especially in uncarpeted apartments, there’s not a lot the people upstairs can do. I used to have downstairs neighbors that would pound on the ceiling if we walked in the kitchen anytime after 9pm. we weren’t stomping, running or walking heavily, we didn’t wear shoes in the apartment. Sometimes, that’s life in an apartment.

Also, to 13.1: caring about spelling doesn’t make me an elitist prick. Being mean to the girl about it might but I didn’t say anything demeaning about the kid. I said I’m biased by people not being able to spell at an age where I feel like most people would have picked up basic spelling skills. That could very easily be my privilege showing, which I acknowledge (since that would be a bias). You make a good point about it being as much the fault of the education as the educated. I’m still Team Neighbor on the noise though.

Highschool graduate, champeen speller! My best bud can’t spell to save his life, and one of the CNAs working in the hospital I am employed at doesn’t know how to spell ‘thigh’ or ‘gauze’. It’s kind of a sad world we live in.

Hear! My beloved spouse snores like a landslide. I used to be a “deadlike” sleeper but working a grave shift for 2 years ruined that so now I have a hellofa time getting to sleep. We got a “sleep machine” that has about a dozen different sounds like “rain” “trains” “waterfall” “ocean” that are all just white noise with flavors. Turn that on and give me 5 minutes head start on the spouse, and i’m gone. Once asleep no prob – go to town with the out-of-tune saxophone and elephants wearing tap shoes!

…and this was one of the triggers to me changing majors from Environmental Science, with a focus on Nuke to Psychology, focus on Social. All the Env classes were frickin 6am. Psych started at a reasonable 8 or 9. Other reasons too and i am delighted with the choice here 20 years later (oh gawd…), but I’m also fine admitting that not being a morning person had a strong part in it as well.
