It would make so much more enjoyable if there were Dwight references on our walls

The sentence is “It is exactly 26 steps away” not what you wrote here. The phrases”the bins” and “26 steps” are plural, however neither of these is the subject. The distance (referred to as “it”) is the subject and is singular.

infanttyrone was pointing out that “it” incorrectly referred back to “the recycling bins” — i.e., the second note should have read “They are exactly 26 steps away.”

It could also be interpreted as, “The area of the hallway with the recycle bins is 26 steps away.” Either way, is it really worth arguing?

Agreed. If “the distance” is the intended subject of the second sentence, then “is” is exactly right. I was just using the available materials to build something on which to hang the don’t vs. doesn’t thing.

Hats (or berets) off to Bill Clinton for giving us the “is” is construct.
In more ways than just a little blue dress, he has come to be spot on.

In this case, our curiosity isn’t about what the meaning of “is” is, but what the meaning of “it” is. Not worth arguing about, since we are unlikely to know which way the Dwight fan meant “it”.
Surely it is not worth trying to make a Federal case out of “it”.

Excuse me, but wouldn’t the number of steps away the bins happen to be depend upon the length of the average stride of any particular individual?

Oh. Wait. You’re fussing over grammar…carry on carrying on.

I feel it necessary to quote Alice in Wonderland here:

      ———

      ‘Found what?’ said the Duck.

‘Found it,’ the Mouse replied rather crossly: ‘of course you know what “it” means.’

‘I know what “it” means well enough, when I find a thing,’ said the Duck: ‘it’s generally a frog or a worm.”

      ———

Hope that clears everything up :)

it isn’t gramatically incorrect, concerning the use of is and are…if the reference is to the point at which the recycle bins can be used to dispense of recyclable waste products i’m bored sue me

don’t be silly, the distance can’t be “away.” it’s just 26 steps, not 26 steps “away.” the reference is obviously the bins. dwight is wrong.

The signs ARE grammatically correct. One says “The recycling bins are 10 steps…” and the response is “It is exactly 26 steps…”

Is the gigglebrax tree not bearing fruit today?

The gigglebrax tree seems to be rooted in ambiguity today.
In some outcome universes it (the tree) is barren.
In others, heavy fruit drops and kills Schrodinger’s poor little vegan cat.
Heisenberg is unsure whether to be sad or glad about that…but…

Just what does “it” in the response refer to? The recycling bins? Those are plural, while “it” is singular.

What we have here is an unclear antecedent, which that most erudite and authoritative corpus of knowledge refers to as an “error in writing”.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antecedent_(grammar)#Unclear_antecedents

That said, the same section concedes that an antecedent which refers to something familiar to both parties may be absent in discourse (“written or spoken communication”). Aha! Therefore, sign #2 is CORRECT!

      AshleyG gets the gold star.

Why not just move the stupid recycling bins so they’re closer to the garbage cans??? Then there’s NO EXCUSE!

The recycling bins are RIGHT next to the trash cans at my school and people still throw their plastic bottles into the trash cans.

The recycling bins are 0 steps away from the trash cans and people still don’t recycle. 10 steps away is asking quite a bit from people.

I saw a smoker toss her cigarette butt onto the ground right next to bins (which contain a smoke tray for stubs). Some people will always be f*cking lazy no matter what to do for their convenience.
