Enh…I can see both sides of this. On the one hand, expecting someone else to provide for you is never a good idea. On the other…from the tone I’m guessing that the deceased was supposedly active in the community, doing charities, and the like–and noone decided to do the same in return.

Heh. In other words, you have no respect for yourself, and expect that whatever family will be dealing with the arrangements will have no respect for you either?

My brother and I had to deal with just this issue when our mother died a few years back. She had insurance to cover the expenses, but we were still apalled that the ‘cardboard box’ option was even offered us in the first place.

That’s a LOT of visitation hours; 3 hours on Friday, 6 1/2 hours on Saturday. They must have been expecting a huge turnout. Normally families wrap that up in no more than a couple of hours in a single visitation.

She should have used her income tax refund as a down payment for the funeral costs!

But that’s ok — God will take care of it (with a 12.75% loan compounded daily).

Even a little “to-do” is incredibly expensive in the funeral business. And I bet it’s a majority of people in the US who don’t have money put aside for funeral expenses. It makes me kind of sad that communities don’t help each other out the way they used to in the “good old days.” (These are only days I’ve read about, and I’m not sure when they occurred, or whether any helping out actually happened. Just guessing.)

You don’t have to buy a burial casket, but a cremation casket. They are cheaper. Families can rent the fancier versions for the viewing and burn the body in the less expensive version. It’s still expensive, but it could mean the difference between paying a few hundred dollars and a few thousand. The price of urns, though… wow!
