Anti Spooky: Sorry to have to be the one to break the news, but...

Harry Potter: Not Real
Sparkly Vampires: Not Real
Fibromyalgia: Real

Try not to drink too much of the vodka you're going to steal from your parents' liquor cabinet to console yourself. It's not good for a 12-year-old.

You point to evidence that proves the even larger point that there are a number of reasons why someone would choose the elevator over the stairs.

As someone who chooses to take the elevator because of my hidden chronic illness (although I appear to be fit), I judge this note-writer an ignorant bitch.

It's because a lot of the commenters are fat and it hit a nerve. Honestly, 85% of the comments begin with "I'm fat, but it's because..."

Granted, the note-writer is a self-righteous snot who incorrectly thinks her opinions matter.

HELLO FELLOW LOCAL!

Honestly I just try not to go into tall buildings. Or Riccarton Mall. Or Ballantynes. (I've heard stories about the contractors who worked on it deciding never to go in there...)

You're probably right though, the lift should have plenty of safety mechanisms to stop it falling, the stairs on the other hand...

I'm medically underweight which plays havoc with my health. I also have old sports injuries especially in my joints and calves. I look young and healthy if I'm not using my cane but a hell of a lot of fat people are MUCH healthier than I am.

Sometimes I use a walking stick. Sometimes I don't. And I always get uncomfortable when I see someone I know because of people like you who assume there is no middle ground between being completely able-bodied and unable to walk at all. Maybe those people could walk around the store without a scooter... but then they wouldn't be able to do anything at all for the next three days while they recovered from the effort. You don't know their medical status. And incidentally, it's often easier to walk normally immediately after a rest, so someone who gets up out of a chair or scooter might well not look disabled - but ten minutes later, it can be a whole different story.

BMI was never supposed to be an individual measure in the first place. It was to track trends in populations. Using it on a single person is inaccurate and potentially dangerous because you're using an arbitrary measurement that doesn't give you any actually useful information but makes you think it does.

I love the blog http://fathealth.wordpress.com. Full of stories where fat prejudice in the medical profession caused long term harm thanks to doctors obsessed with the "EAT LESS EXERCISE MORE!" road to skinniness - as I recall there's also one story of a woman who was rapidly losing weight and later died of cancer, and the poster couldn't stop wondering if it could have been caught sooner if people hadn't just assumed that losing weight was always a good thing.

Really, Jami? Really? Do they consistently pay men less for the same work? Do they deny them reproductive healthcare? Do they refuse them promotions because they have children and therefore can't handle responsibility at work? Do they threaten them with rape whenever the men dare to disagree with them? Do they *actually* rape them? Do they tell them they deserved being raped because they went out alone at night, had a few drinks or went to a friend's place expecting not to be assaulted? Do they put men in jail for making false accusations when the men report being raped, despite enormous evidence that it actually happened? Do they "smack them around" and leave them with massive injuries? Do they murder them? Do they forcibly institutionalise them and treat them with electroshock therapy for completely sane behaviour like being angry or not fitting social norms? Do they sell them into marriage with drunk, abusive women twice or three times their age?

What's that, they don't? Maybe you should reconsider your bullshit statements then.

I live in Christchurch NZ where stairwells are often cracked to pieces. Every time I have to decide between a lift and a staircase, I imagine another earthquake hitting and which one I'd rather be in. The lift always wins somehow.

I wouldn't say people are fat because they take the elevators to floors 2 or 3, it just seems lazy, especially if you're a perfectly healthy looking young person. Especially because waiting for the elevator can take longer than walking up to the second floor of some buildings...

I have congestive heart failure, but am quite thin. You would not know it to look at me that it is impossible for me to walk up 2 flights of stairs on some days. So what would this person say to me? That I'm lazy? Yeah, the old "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" fits here. They can keep their opinions to themselves IMO.
