There’s something to be said against someone who repeatedly ignores polite social cues. You shouldn’t have to tell someone, “hey buddy, fuckoff, I don’t like you!” to get your point across that you aren’t really interested in a friendship.

For me, it depends on how close the relationship was beforehand. If it was more than just the casual “hello”, and they told me that they broke their leg or something, I’d try to help them with household chores (if they agreed, obviously).

If they’re practically strangers and they told me that they now have a chronic condition, I’d leave them alone. If it was me, I would want to be left alone to deal it with it among my close friends instead of some stranger who suddenly has taken an interest in my health out of pity or something.

That’s interesting! It’s not a response I’d considered. No, we chat and stuff at times. I used to babysit some of the kids before I went off to school, and yes, this was while I was sick. After I went to school I didn’t see them as much, though I still buy the kids gifts when I go places! Unfortunately, both of us are chronically ill so I don’t know how much “better” we’ll be, exactly. I’m less bad, I can quantify that.

I don’t like Terry either, and I just now met her: (I heard her sigh in there), “I guess I just have to accept that you…,” is PA in the extreme. If you indeed have to accept it, you whiny git, accept it quietly and move on. Adults do in fact accept changes in closeness every day, and if we don’t like the change, the card we write says “I miss you. Please call after the holiday rush is over.” If they never do, well, they never do and it’s time to find a friend you don’t screw up with so badly.

As just an observer, if one of my neighbors told me they were sick, I’d leave them alone to deal with it, and assume that they’d reach out once they’re better. If you did reach out and still got not nothing, that is a dick move on their part.

You’re right; it is immature and ridiculous. But it’s also equally jerky to lead a person on and passive aggressively pretend to be their (non-committal) friend.

In other words, there is something to be said for jerks who do have the guts to say to someone they don’t like, “I don’t like you enough to be friends.” Instead of spinelessly pretending that they do like you.

I have actually received a Christmas Card that I had to SIGN for, as it was thought that I missed telling someone Thank you for a previous one. Of course, I didn’t find out the reason by the giver, but by EVERYONE else related, whom the giver complained too. Oh, and I had the email that had the Thank you for the previous one. Relatives….

It’s okay, after the idiotic multiple hour fight (including mid-conversation hangups!) I had with my parents because they didn’t get xmas day with my family (instead they got the 27th) I’ve decided I’m not having Christmas with them ever again (especially after they told me “We only give presents if we get them”).

I guarantee I’ll get a card similar to this and I’ll scan it in just for PAN.

Don’t worry, I’ll still have them over for New Years. Unless they decide to guilt trip that up too.
