In my personal experience, the best roommates are Albanians with drinking problems. The one I have been living with for three years has never made a sound apart from opening his room door, when going to sleep after a day at work and evening of drinking somewhere that is not in my home.

Having a roommate situation where we share all the food (and budget it out at the end of the month so no one’s over- or underpaying) has really made our world a lot happier. The other common roommate problem — dishes — is also not a big issue because if someone leaves a pot in the sink you don’t usually get too angry, because you think about how you ate a bunch of that chili they made last night, and then you just wash it and move on with your life.

Not saying everything’s always perfect, but it sure beats finding bitchy notes on top of day-old burritos.

I’ve been lucky where I haven’t had to have a roommate, I do have an extra room that people can use for a night or two but I’ve had several friends talk about moving in and I but the kibosh on that quickly.

Friend or not at the beginning, I always ended up hating my roommates or housemates with a passion before even 6 months were up. It was a surefire way to break my friendship with them.

Honestly, I think the best roommate relationships are ones where the roomies aren’t friends. It’s easier to establish rules of shared living and call them out on rule breaking when you don’t have friendship complicating matters. Similarly, you feel more aware of intrusion when it isn’t someone you’ve bared your soul to.

Unless the person is Silent Psycho’s roommate.

No, quite the opposite. Duh is the sober flatmate who put the burrito on the table after finding it abandoned in the microwave, while Idiot is the drunky who didn’t realise she’d put the burrito in the microwave and wrote the stupid note about food stealing.
