I find when I make “The library will be closed” signs for holidays people pay more attention if I use clip arts and different colors for the word “closed.”

I do not, however, use a buttload of fonts.

All the same I’m on the notewriter’s side. I’ve got a coworker who puts dishes away without even washing them. It’s no wonder he’s single.

I had coworkers leave knives covered in cake in a cup (point down). We found the knives yesterday, and we haven’t had cake since before Xmas at least…blech

We can earn extra vacation time by doing little projects and learning new skills at work. One of the ones I’m doing is organizing all the cupboards.

We serve kids snacks after story time. I found a lot of trays just thick with cookie crumbs and one of those jars with a spout often used for sun tea with a big sticky streak of tea down it and the spout so loaded with tea residue it took five minutes to get it to stop coming out every time I pressed the button.

It’s only one coworker who has this habit. All the others clean up after themselves. So I know who’s responsible.

I also had to wash the shelves because of him.

At the risk of starting another “Indoors/Outdoors” war, I think it would be worse for the environment if every employee cleaned their own dishes:

10:20 Employee #1 – turn on hot water; wait for water to get hot; wet sponge; add soap; wash out and rinse coffee cup; turn off water; put clean cup in dish rack; turn back on water; rinse out sponge; go back to desk.

10:38 Employee #2 – turn on hot water; wait for water to get hot; wet sponge; add soap; wash coffee cup along with dish and fork used for morning snack; turn off water; put clean dishes in dish rack; turn back on water; rinse out sponge; go back to desk.

12:50 Employee #3 – turn on hot water; wait for water to get hot; wet sponge; add soap; wash out and rinse plates, utensils and tupperware from lunch; turn off water; put clean dishes in dish rack; turn back on water; hand sponge to employee #4 who has to wash his lunch dishes; return to desk.

12:52 Employee #4 – rinse out sponge and sink because employee #3′s food was messy and stinky; add soap; wash out and rinse plates, utensils and tupperware from lunch; turn off water; put clean dishes in dish rack; turn back on water; hand sponge to employee #5 who has to wash her lunch dishes; walk around the line of people forming at the sink to wash their dishes before lunch break is over…

12:59 Employees #7-32 are going to be late back from lunch and the management will not be pleased.

Repeat the process later mid-afternoon as the same number of people wash out the coffee cups they have been drinking from all day. Or in the case of this office, the tea cups they’ve been sipping from.

That’s a lot of water used, v.s. Everyone putting their dishes in the dishwasher, and the kitchen “slaves” running the DW at the end of the day, and emptying it the next morning.

Alright, let the war between the dishwasher and wash-their-own-dishes camps begin.

I suppose it might be a trade off thing, Kat.

The library where I work for years had a severe problem with ants until one of the branch managers finally got HQ to send out an exterminator. Up until then if there was so much as one crumb left out we’d be infested with ants and putting out baits and spraying poisons (well away from food but still) all over the place. Which of course is more harmful to the environment in the long term than someone taking 30 seconds to wash their dirty coffee mug.

Course they never did and somehow I ended up having to take time out of my work every day to do everyone’s dishes before the massive invasion had begun. Which meant more poisons, more baits, and me having to scrub down all the counters and tables with the only cleaner we were allowed to have at the time – Soft Scrub with bleach.

Which sometimes splattered on my clothing, causing bleach stains, which meant I needed to go out and buy more work tops. Which also can’t be good for the environment in the long run.

All of which could’ve been avoided if my coworkers had just been grown ups and cleaned up after themselves!

Major confession: I am the one who clogged up the “tea station” sink at work. But it was a total accident. I poured some extremely greasy stuff down the sink, and it just happened. Not like I was at home and could start farting around with the plunger or Drano. And no maintenenance folks were around. So I just left it, and the next day, you guessed it, there was a very peevish note left at the sink. Harumph.

I’m having trouble with it on any computer I use. Be it my laptop, desktop, or a work computer.

Hey, if my coworkers can be on Facebook when the library is slow I can be on PAN.

I’m also getting a Trojan warning from Vipre. But this has only been happening since yesterday afternoon. I’m thinking it might be from one of the advertisers. I’ve been on trustworthy sites before where the ads on the side download mal/spy/hijackware and the only solution is for the webmaster to stop allowing that advertiser on their site.

I did similar to a particular half-sister I disliked (long story). A can of tomato sauce will eat holes in a stainless steel pan probably in less time than it was given, but I kept the ‘science experiment’ in the bottom of our fridge for near a month before it was cleaned out, then given back.

Oh wow, this is truly awful news. I never thought I’d feel so sad about the passing of somebody I never got to meet in person. Maybe it’s because she really seemed like somebody whom I could be friends with if we ever got the chance – a very witty, sweet, caring individual. I had no idea the comment I made about her on the previous PAN would be the last one ever. I hope it at least made her laugh a little despite what she was going through, and I hope she didn’t suffer too much in the end.

I still have a candle lit from when my grandmother passed away last week, but I think I’ll light another one for her. Rest in peace, Red. You will be missed.

Thank you again Jami for the post.

And condolences to her family, loved ones and friends.

I was lucky enough to ‘meet Red’ via Carolyn Hax and WaPo and another community as well.

It’s been kinda a touchstone for me when I see you both and others from PAN in other online communities.

I’ve been processing her passing as well as a dearly loved Auntie this week.

When we think about folks like ‘Andrew from the internet’ and others who can make life online as dark as our worst IRL moments Red is the best of online communities.

She made me guffaw, spit things at my laptop, step back in wonder as her direct clarity and her comments have helped me through tough times.

Thanks to Red and all here, even the trolls – what wonder is missing from a world without trolls? – sometimes the internet works.
