    I assume you’re talking about Park LaBrea (Actually one block north of wilshire, but the houses are so garish yellow I’m guessing this is what you mean). I happen to live there, and I’ll have you know that I have a line out my door every night.

    Mainly because my roommate is a “masseuse”, but nobody seems to complain about the paint job…

    I live a few blocks south of there (Glo) in a recently remodeled 4 unit craftsman turned into a Spanish style with bright yellow stucco and what we call the “Taco Bell Roof”. It;s actually very well done but the neighbors hated it, saying it was to bright (and they are Mexican BTW). Since then all the houses on my street have been re-done and it’s become a really nice block.

  Good lord, how tasteless to leave such a note. I don’t know if it is racist or xenophobic. This person doesn’t get out much. Depending on what city you go to in the world, some places like bright colors. I lived in Iceland for a year and the houses were all painted really bright colors that contrasted nicely with the stark volcanic landscape.

    I’ve never been to California (I like stable ground, LOL) but I have been to Arizona and everything there seems to fit the adobe spirit of the history of the place.
    If there is no city ordinance forbidding the color scheme used by Mrs. Hernandez, Angelo should keep his opinions to himself and continue to enjoy the food.

    Last time I checked the US was a member of NATO which means that an attack on one member nation is an attack on all member nations requiring a response from all others…or is that only when the US is coming to someone else’s aid?

    Look at North Korea…why is everyone asking the US to engage? Let South Korea, Japan, China and Russia deal with their neighbor…but NO…The world wants US involvement.

    Unfortunately no one fought the war over the genocide. The US turned a ship-full of refugees around in Florida and sent it back to occupied France, some say knowing that all aboard would be sent to Eastern Europe and almost certain death. The Russians were more than complicit in the holocaust, but they were our allies on the Eastern front so we said nothing.

    A minor point, but I can’t stand the way Americans are ALWAYS going on about how grateful we should be to them for WW2! We (the UK) started the war after an unprovoked attack on another country (Poland). You (US) entered the war 2 years later – after sitting back getting nice and rich while millions of people died and a nazi fascist regime was threatening to take over Europe - only when your precious Pearl Harbour was attacked! Yes, we needed you to help win the war and did want your involvement, but America only got involved when their own interests were threatened.

    We didn’t get very rich on Lend/Lease and for the two years before the US was officially in the war we lost more merchant seamen to u-boats that the British.
    By the way, the US did not get involved in Europe because of Pearl Harbor. We declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on the US as an ally of the Japanese then and only then did the US declare war on Germany.
    You may not know much US history, but our very first President warned against foreign entanglements and we have pretty much tried to heed his words for over two centuries.

    America did save Britain from Nazism. We would have starved in 1941 if not for America. I thank you, as does my father who serviced the USAF planes which took off from bases in eastern England during the war. But if you hadn’t saved us, the Soviets would have won the war anyway. Would have taken them 10 more years, but no doubt about it. Brits would be speaking Russian as a second language today, not German. So let’s just put that myth to bed, can we?

    Dunkirk? One of my dad’s friends was on the HMT Lancastria, sunk by the Luftwaffe just off Dunkirk. He spent 18 hours bobbing about in the Atlantic. He’d have been ever so grateful to see an American ship steaming toward him, as would the 4000 of his comrades who drowned around him. Unfortunately Dunkirk was May 1940, some 19 months before the US joined us.

    As for “avoiding foreign entanglements”, wasn’t it FDR who said that he wanted the US to be the world’s policeman? It’s a shame they took the LAPD as their model and not the Mounties. Ask anyone from these countries whether the US has avoided interfering with their affairs: Iran (1953), Iraq (1963, and practically ever since), Afghanistan (1978), East Timor (1975: 200,000 killed), Cambodia (700,000 dead. Yes! America backed the communist Khmer Rouge!)…the list goes on. Anyone from these countries can tell you of someone they knew who was killed by some arsehole backed by US dollars and US arms. “Benign”, anyone?

    Might I make the respectful suggestion that the ludicrous US arms budget is not expended in the interest of world peace, but for the benefit of such corporations as Halliburton, Boeing, AAI, and General Dynamics? They certainly seem to do better out of the money than the pulverized civilians of Fallujah.

    As for the Marshall plan, that plan did nothing for the UK except finally destroy it as a superpower. FDR, and later Truman, loathed the British Empire and made it a condition of the post-war lend-lease settlement that the UK dismantle it. Now, I’m no fan of empire, and Britain’s demise was inevitable. But isn’t it funny how the US, which makes such great play about freedom (self-serving and laughably inacurate films like The Patriot) got right into building its own empire. Many of the dirty, dark little wars the CIA has fought since WWII have been in pursuit of empire. But still the word sticks in your throat.

    Like I said, funny comments. Funny to be lectured on US and European history by someone who seems to know only what they’re told.

    DISCLAIMER: I like this site and the people who comment here. It makes me laugh, while telling me something simultaneously depressing and uplifting about the human condition. It’s no place for geopolitical discussions. But I didn’t start this.

    I never said we were against enlighted self-interest. Just that we don’t get involved if we have no interests involved.
    As for the USSR, they received lend/lease aid from the US as well. In fact the Soviet Union came out of WWII $20 billion in debt to the US.
    That the US dislikes empires is not a secret, but the British Empire would have ended after WWII without the US in any event…just like the French Empire did. It’s really hard to keep colonies when the locals have seen you bloodied.
    Finally, the last time I looked large US corporations are not alone in the world of arms sales.

    Wow those are some real blinders there, CB. The US always has ulterior motives when it gets involved. That’s why Ronald Reagan took Apartheid South Africa’s side and called Nelson Mandela a terrorist.

    As for the current war, NATO was on our side but Bush ignored NATO’s request for more thorough intelligence and a more diplomatic approach. Part of being in NATO and the UN is diplomacy.

    The reason the US got pulled into WW2 was because we couldn’t seem to keep our imperialistic noses out of the rest of the world’s affairs. We were shipping supplies and providing assistance to British forces long before Japan attacked. Nobody owes the US a thing because we’ve been collecting pounds upon pounds of flesh ever since.

    Look, I’m glad I live here but I know that my freedom and prosperity comes at the expense of a lot of people. I’m not going to get upset when they call me out.

    I’m more than aware that the US has it’s fingers deeply imbedded in the geopolitical pie.
    I just wish people would ask themselves what the world would be like if her fingers were not in the pie is all.
    I don’t see the USSR defeating Germany without a Western Front, but that’s all conjecture anyway.
    Public opinion was very much isolationist in the late 1930’s and 1940 and ‘41 and many still think that lend/lease was unconstitutional, but we did what we could.
    Japan was pissed because we stopped selling them steel and (but don’t quote me on this one) oil.

    I’m no Pollyanna and don’t think the US is a saint…just that we are not the demons some would have us be.
