I’m not exactly sure what a “pre-warning” is, but it sure sounds serious.

June 22nd, 2011 · 54 Comments

Roslyn in Houston found this note under her roommate’s windshield wiper just over a month after they both moved in. Puzzlingly, she says, “We do not own a rooster, nor have we ever seen or even heard one.”

(In that case, Roslyn, I’d tell your roommate’s boyfriend to pre-watch-out.)

This rooster is a serious problem!!! He is going to get hunted if someone doesn't get rid of him!! Pre-Warning!

“Place cats in box”

March 16th, 2011 · 53 Comments

A few months ago, one of the stray cats around Kristen‘s townhouse in Redding, California had a litter of kittens, which have since grown into a small army of vicious feral felines. Kristen says she and her husband were just discussing getting one those live cat traps to deal with the problem when they came across the landlord’s DIY version.

“Apparently,” says Kristen, “he expects us to wrestle one of these very angry animals through the hole in this cardboard box, leave it there to play with some makeshift ‘cat toys,’ and then call the Humane Society in the morning. It’s so easy!”

I’m thinking this landlord must watched one too many Maru videos on YouTube

FERAL CATS: Place cats in box. Leave out of the rain. Call Haven Humane 241-2550.

Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.

Kitty Containment: A global issue

March 14th, 2011 · 102 Comments

Greta from Sydney couldn’t help but take notice when her new flatmate affixed no fewer than five pleas for feline containment around their home. Greta’s takeaway? “I don’t think I’m supposed to let the cat out.”

The cat ('Bones') is now here. he has to stay in for at least 2 weeks. IF YOU OPEN ANY DOOR OR WINDOW: MAKE SURE THE CAT CAN'T ESCAPE

DON'T LET THE CAT OUT K,THX

DON'T LET THE CAT OUT

Don't Let the cat out (he's in there)DON'T LET THE CAT OUT

While this plethora of preventative postings might strike some as overkill, Jens from Oman informs us that his flatmate did in fact release his friend Jerry’s cat “while in an intoxicated state.” Though the cat was recovered, a “massive reward” was required, prompting Jerry to place these helpful notes on their front door.

Just in case you are stupid enough not to remember I live here

DO NOT let the cat out when u leave or open this door

Finally, we received this bulletin from Michelle and Guy, spotted at their local postoffice in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Though not actually passive-aggressive, we still felt that it was our civic duty to share this alarming note with our readers.

Attention Cat Owners!

Dear Monterey Aquarium Staff: Our submitter, Kevin from Napa, would like to suggest that you consider revising the phrasing of your photography policy. (Unless this type of thing is what you’re trying to avoid.)

Adds Kevin: “I don’t know which is more juvenile: thinking this sign was funny, or trying to pretend that it’s not.”

Please don't flash the octopus

Okay, is it Friday yet?

October 17th, 2010 · 56 Comments

Two simple rules for using the garbage chute:

DO put your dog poo down the chute.

TENANTS PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT YOUR DOG POOH DOWN THE SHUTE. IT SMELLS IF LEFT IN. THANK YOU! MANAGEMENT

DON’T put your dog, Pooh, down the chute.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PUT ANY ANIMAL, DEAR OR ALIVE, IN THE TRASH CHUTE. If your pet dies, and you do not know the proper way to dispose of the remains, call the office. We will see the remains are disposed of in a humane and sanitary manner.

The most pitiful folk song never written

September 25th, 2010 · 35 Comments

Monica in Iowa City, do-gooder that she is, volunteers with a friendly visiting program at the local senior living center. And while Monica’s no stranger to old folks and their antics, even she was struck by the sight of this heartbreakingly despondent note on one resident’s door.

Why did you Take my Humming Bird? Why did you crumple up my map of Mother Earth?

I couldn’t help but think of poor Snowman, the ill-fated pony from the German petting zoo (and as I see it, kindred spirit to this old lady in Iowa). I picture them kvetching together in heaven someday, asking “Why? Why? Why?” for all eternity.

Why did you feed me to death?

Daddy, why are all the cages empty?

July 15th, 2010 · 122 Comments

You’re a zookeeper. You’re sick of answering the same damn question all day long. How do you handle it?

Well, there’s the PC approach…

Our octopus has completed its life cycle. A new octopus will be here soon.

The pedantic approach…

Writes Sarah in Los Angeles:

And then there’s my personal favorite, the German approach.

Why did you feed me to death? Feeding our animals is forbidden! In remembrance of our Pony

World Cup fans and great cats: together in vuvuzela disdain

July 3rd, 2010 · 43 Comments

From South Africa, a non-passive-aggressive weekend bonus note!

I wouldn’t be surprised if this sign — from Cheetah rehab center near Capetown — was only posted after the recent demise of some hapless Darwin Award candidate. (One who thought blasting one of the most irritating sounds on earth in the face of a large predatory cat was a good idea.)

Please refrain from blowing vuvuzela's [sic] in or around Cheetah Outreach Facility. Kind Regards, Management

Warnings for the altruistic tourist

June 13th, 2010 · 84 Comments

Juliet from Los Angeles came upon this sign near the summit of a 12-km hike up Turrialba Volcano, in Costa Rica. “As I stared down into giant crater of the active volcano, dotted with sulfur pools, I realized the sign was right. Swimming in those pools probably wasn’t worth the expense.”

It is costly to take an injured or dead person out. Avoid unnecessary expense.

The dryly practical approach seems to be a popular one at tourist locations around the world — especially zoos, such as this one on Langkawi Island:

PLEASE BE SAFE - Do not stand, sit, climb or lean on the fences. If you fall, animals could eat you and that might make them sick. Thank you.

Meanwhile, this resort in the Bahamas adds its own whimsical twist:

PLEASE DO NOT DROP CIGARETTE BUTTS ON THE GROUND. THE FISH COME OUT AT NIGHT TO SMOKE THEM AND WE ARE TRYING TO GET THEM TO QUIT.
