Today’s lesson: not-so-friendly letters

October 6th, 2011 · 62 Comments

As part of a lesson about civic responsibility, many teachers encourage their students to participate in letter-writing campaigns to Congress, the school board, the Mayor, or other public figures. (Thanks to the efforts of second-graders in Mission, Texas, for example, Texans can now proudly refer to tortilla chips and salsa as their official “state snack.”)

Meanwhile, this teacher in Ypsilanti, Michigan enlisted her 18 middle-school students in a cause even closer to home — her home, that is — by getting them each to write a persuasive letter asking her noisy neighbor to curb his all-night partying.

Dear Neighbor, Please Do not blast any music while my teacher is trying to sleep. If she doesn't get any sleep we won't be able to learn. And I will get in trouble with my parents. Please stop for the sake of my education. Sincerely, [redacted] student

Playing the terrorism card to justify your late-night karaoke dance party? Really?

September 25th, 2011 · 58 Comments

If it wasn’t obvious, Lorah in NYC says the response note here was most definitely a total lie. (The residents of 4B are musical theater actors, and sing-and-dance-a-thons are not uncommon events in their apartment.)

Please respect your neighbors. Any singing/dancing/noise after 11pm, management & police will be notified. -The Tenants

So sorry for all the commotion last night. We meant no disrespect by singing/dancing. A dear friend returned from overseas, fighting the war on terror. We had a celebration for his return. It would be a shame if you do not support our soldiers overseas. Please come see our apartment. It's red, white, and blue. NOW WHO'S THE TERRORIST?! <3 the residents of 4B xoxoxo

Hampstead Row Houses (and Rows over Houses)

September 18th, 2011 · 36 Comments

David spotted this oh-so-charming scene while cycling through the well-to-do area of Hampstead, London.

Adds David: “The completely knackered fence is in front of an overgrown plot and right next door to a well looked-after house (possibly owned by old folk who are convinced the neighbourhood has gone to ruin.”)

This disgraceful eyesore of a fence is owned by a firm of architects. A profession dedicated to the art of landscaping!

Meanwhile, Alison was a bit perplexed by this note (and the seemingly undisturbed hedge below) in West Hampstead. “I stared at the hedge for ages trying to work out what was wrong with it,” she says. “Finally I just took a picture and ran away.”

We apologise for the state of this hedge. It is the result of an act of vandalism by a resident in this building. We are taking action.

So close, and yet…

September 1st, 2011 · 99 Comments

Darin in Chicago came across the note on the side of his neighbor’s garage just as he was throwing his own dog’s crap in the trash can. (This is kinda like getting out the new roll of TP, but then leaving it on the side of the sink to get wet instead of just putting it on the dispenser…except, worse.)

You pick up the dog crap, but insist on leaving it next to the garbage can. I don't understand.

I don’t really understand the logic here either, but perhaps this particular dog owner is still dealing with the scars from dealing with neighbors like this one, from Ottawa:

Mim decided to take a back road to a friend’s house in Wisconsin when she spotted this sign in someone’s front yard — presumably, she says, a reaction to the two large silos that were recently erected in the corn field across the road.

Thank you Mike, Jeanne [last name redacted] for being such inconsiderate neighbors.

Isn’t starting middle school torture enough?

August 21st, 2011 · 67 Comments

Hollie in Portland, Oregon spotted this note on the second-floor landing as she was walking up to her apartment.

While I’m usually not in favor of note-leaving when a direct confrontation would do, I give this one a pass — creative spelling and all — because, really, have you ever met a middle schooler without an an attitude? I’d say forcing a kid to make it through eighth grade is enough of an ass-kicking already.

Dear niebors, I'm tiered of you wakeing me up During the night. When I go middle school in two weeks I'm gonna need to wake up at 6:15! Next time you stomp in the middle of the night I'm gonna call the office and tell them about all the times you woke me up, especelly if you make it so I'm late for school! Sincerly, The girl who lives in 346

This flamingo has flown

Writes Leslie in Richmond, Virginia: “The note’s creator seems to have purposely made his/her community note as undecorative as possible, but left the USA sign, flag, toadstools, ceramic rabbit, and rainbow-colored pinwheels untouched.”

Due to some low-lifed piece of crap who has been stealing my decorations for the last three months i will no longer be decorating for the various holidays any longer.

Personally, I would have liked to see if adding of few of these to the yard would have solved the problem.

Kate in Melbourne caught a glimpse of this note from the street, and it looked so ridiculous that she snuck into the private lot to get a closer look. Adds Kate: “I imagine this person is quite popular with the neighbours.”

(By the way, Kate apologizes for the poor resolution of the photos; she only had her mobile phone with her at the time.)

Cinderella be drizzunk

July 31st, 2011 · 22 Comments

“I saw this when passing by a neighbour’s house, and thought that this was one of their better efforts,” writes Kelly in the U.K. “I personally would have just chucked them myself.”

(Adds Kelly: “I’m guessing they belonged to the same person who decorated half the street with vomit.”)

Are these your shoes? Too drunk to remember where you left them? Sorry I am not your Prince Charming and didn't search the neighbourhood to find out whose foot fits the slippers LOL

Meanwhile, the Internet’s all “been there/done that/seen the animated GIF.”

bitch be drunk as hell, losing shoes and shit

Stay classy, Little Rock

July 25th, 2011 · 65 Comments

Our submitter from Little Rock, Arkansas offers the following mea culpa: “I was heading to the pool this afternoon, and while loading my car (a blue Mustang) I set my cup of ice water on the ground. Unfortunately, after I finishing loading, I forgot about the cup and drove off.” After returning to her apartment complex, our submitter found the cup had reappeared next to her parked car — with the addition of the following note.

Sure, the notewriter could have simply thrown the cup in the garbage using half as much effort — and that might have been the classy, neighborly thing to do. But it’s the principle of the thing, you see:  honest mistakes will not be tolerated!

The classy lady in the blue mustang litters!
