I’ll jump back in on the smoking issue.

First, in Ohio it hasn’t hurt businesses at all. People go to bars to socialize and a lot of places offer smoking tents attached to the establishment.

Still I hate when people hijack the process to further an agenda. If you want to encourage bars to go smoke-free then organize a boycott. That’s why McDonald’s and BK went smoke free in the 80s. Remember those foil ashtrays?

It’s also why a lot of restaurants offered a non-smoking section. People took their money elsewhere.

After I quit smoking I stopped spending a lot of time in bars because I really don’t like the smell of stale cigarettes. I would pop in from time to time and be sociable but I never stayed long because I didn’t like the stench.

Recently Ohio passed a strip club law that forces strip clubs to close at midnight. It was pushed through our legislature by a Christian group. I think every state official that let that thing pass should be hanged for treason. I’m not going to do the hanging, but these guys are traitors for passing such a stupid and unconstitutional provision. I have more respect for al-Qaida and believe that al-Qaida poses less of a threat to my way of life than the clowns who passed that law…and I don’t even like strip clubs!

Well I have to go. I think this post will probably get flagged by Homeland Security and Dick Cheney will be at my house to shoot me in the face by 11. Fuck him and his 6.5 million dollar pacemaker…paid for by the American taxpayer of course. Hey, do we get that thing back after his term is over? We could put it in somebody who actually has a heart.

While I’m ranting…Who the hell is passing the decebel ordinaces? Loud music is bad for the hearing of patrons and the poor employees who are forced to be in a club all night.
You MAY get cancer from second hand smoke or not…but you WILL go deaf from repeated exposure to loud noises!
Oh, but there are more dancing voters than smoking ones.

On smoking bans. They said they did it for the health of the employees.
Most of the bartenders I ever knew smoked, and BTW, who did not see the ashtrays on the bar when they walked in to apply for the damned job?
How many people in a bar are really all that health conscious? Non-smoking health clubs sure! But bars are the places that society gives us to have our sin, not restrict it.
That’s why the windows are high, smoked and curtained! DUH!!

I know Great Lakes quite well, I have had many of their offerings including Burning River.
Bluegrass Brewing Company is actually in KY (just outside Louisville) probably a big reason why 1. Their bourbon barrel aged beers are so good 2. have a stronger bourbon flavor than a lot of other bourbon barrel brews.

the only downside to traveling through WI and trying beers is there is so much that is seasonal so unless you visit every season you can’t try them all! Though trying any of the New Glarus Unplugged brews is a safe bet.

I’ll note that Hennepin by Ommegang, but the laws here make it hard to find or buy anything that isn’t a big brewery beer and not made here. OMFG! I went to the Ommegang website and they have the sound of a lion roaring. Scared the SHIT out of me! The neighborhood dogs are barking and since I didn’t expect the roar … I thought a lion had escaped the circus!

I’ve not had that sample yet, ugh, but my sister in-law is from Milwaukee and I’ll be passing through WI on my way to visit her and my brother in St. Paul.

I love a good ale aged in a bourbon barrel. I had an Allagash Curieux that was aged in a Jim Beam barrel. It was outstanding. I should have bought a case and aged a few.

The reason I opened up a beer blog is because I love to talk about beer. Lakefront makes a lot of nice beers and they’re up there Wisky. I am pretty loyal to Great Lakes. They’re a very environmentally friendly brewery and they crank out excellent beer. If you like IPA you need to wrap your lips around Commodore Perry IPA. It’s a strong, hoppy ale with a lot of body. Burning River Pale Ale is a nice offering too.

With the weather heating up I’m going tobe on a Saison kick for a while. Try Hennepin by Ommegang out of Cooperstown. I like it more than Saison Dupont. Cleaner finish.

The Pacific Northwest is loaded with great breweries and I’m sure there are some smaller, pub-only places that are interesting if not outstanding. I love craft beer. I’ve heard Bend is an odd little town that mixes hicks and hippies pretty seamlessly. I assume you’re a little more hippie than hick.

I’ve been slowly putting a plan together to move out west. I’m leaning toward Reno because of the access to skiing and the fact that it has a whitewater park in the middle of town. I also dig Portland. I’m leery of smaller towns because the employment situation can be sketchy. I don’t want to get laid off by the only decent employer in a town and end up commuting two hours to work. That’s how I set up shop in Columbus and if not for the long distance between me and a decent slope or some challenging rapids I’d stay. Columbus is a really awesome town to call home.

LOL CB. I have mine and that is all that matters to me! ;)
I have a couple of friends in Ohio. My thought on smoking bans in bars is, isn’t that something the market should decide? If a non-smoking bar is so wonderful then why do all the non-smoking bars in areas that don’t have smoking bans close? If Mollycoddle Mommy doesn’t want precious Timmy to be around smoke because it aggravates his ADD then go to any of the places that don’t have smoking. If more people want smoke free and spend more money then me and my smoking friends do, then I guess my bar will go non-smoking too. Until then don’t make MY bar non smoking just in case you might want to come in one day. here is a spoon. eat my ass.
Big chain bars (meaning more than 3 establishments owned by the same people/company) are shitty. end of story. They do not count as BARS.

So a beer snob eh Claw … want to talk beer with me? You being in Ohio we can even get a lot of the same stuff.

All the smoking ban did for the small bars around this suburb is put them out of business.
No one pays $2 for a single beer to sit in a bar and watch TV if they also like to smoke. They buy a six-pack for $4.00 and put up with the wife and kids.

You brought your kid to a TOM PETTY concert! What did you think we were gonna do, smoke cigars and swill sherry??”

Ohio passed a smoking ban. I quit smoking a while ago but I didn’t like the ban. I think that people should let the market dictate those things.

I do like a smoke-free bar, however, and my smoking friends like it too. They say it cuts down on the number of cigarettes they smoke and they feel more comfortable in the bar. One guy said he likes to smoke his cigarettes, not everybody else’s.

I have several bars in Columbus I like. Being a huge beer snob (hopsnob.blogspot.com) I prefer nice craft beer selection but I’ll be damned if the place I like best is a little family owned Sports Bar close to where I work. They keep Sierra Nevada on hand which satisfies my desire to drink good beer and the staff is really great.

We’ve got two microbreweries that are awesome but they are a little out of the way and there’s a bar close to my house that works for me but by the time I get that close to home I’m not stopping at a bar. Martino’s is the place I do my midweek chilling.

I hate B-dubs (Buffalo Wild Wings) because they cater to a family crowd. I really don’t like having a bunch of 10 year-old kids around when I’m drinking and getting my swear on. And you know the parents of those brats aways have something to say when people get uncouth. Man, fuck you and your ugly ass kids. You’re in a bar. Chuck-E-Cheese is down the street.

Yeah, I mean most of the ones near me have SOME food … but it is bar food. DELICIOUS greasy burgers, deep fried everything, pickled eggs and/or pigs feet. NO SALAD  and a big YES on smoke filled rooms and local beers on tap. If you ever come out to WI while I am here I would be happy to teach you the wonder and beauty of a REAL bar. :)
I’m with you on that Mishee! For a while the smoking ban in Madison excluded establishments that made 70% or more of their money from alcohol sales. No more. Though bars like my fav. are not dives! They are respectable places you could take your grandmother. But there seems to be a cultural difference with regard to bars between WI and the West Coast.

his deciples never taught the gentiles to tithe…they taught giving,
but not tithing as a reqiurment as it was for the jews.
I think churches incorperate that so they can build gigantic churches with p. a systems and make their pastor / priest rich…and it becomes more about money, and what they want.

He said “We have a bar.” and my mom said “No, a REAL bar.” and he said “Well there is blahblah night club.” and I said “NO. a BAR. Where there is no stupid dancing, little to no food. Just people talking and drinking.” and the guy looked at me like I had just asked him where I could buy heroin … actually scratch that, he probably would have been more comfortable with a request for heroin. He then looked at us ALL like were were crazy freaks when my parents said “Oh, sweetie! You are not going to like THAT. See if you can find us a bar before we come back to visit again.”

    CB,

I actually gained respect for Obama when I learned about Jeremiah Wright and his inflammatory sermons. I was worried that he was giving us a shine when he talked about his faith. In fact, I agree with a lot of what Wright said…in his sermons.

I lost all respect for Wright when he added fuel to the fire after Obama so thoughtfully described his relationship with Wright and explained how he felt about Wright’s comments.

If Wright was an honorable man with any shred of respect for Obama he would have kept his mouth shut and let Obama have the center stage. It’s for the greater good.

Instead Wright, like so many so-called preachers, seized the opportunity to promote his own agenda and in doing so he undermined Obama. That’s inexcusable. If Obama loses the election he should kick Wrights ass.

As for what Obama said about hicks in small towns (to paraphrase)…I agree! My parents resemble that remark. My last name is the same as a town outside of Johnstown and I can tell you everybody there is a bible-thumping loon who buys ammo at Wal*Mart and would sooner vote for the devil himself than see a 46 year-old black man in the White House.

In all honesty, Ohio’s troopers are pretty cool. They don’t tend to hassle people too much. I’ve even gotten out of tickets by simply being honest and nice to the cops. I don’t think we’ve had any racial complaints filed against the State Patrol either. The problem with Islam, to get back to that thread, is that the people in those countries tend to be uneducated. That breeds ignorance. As people become more informed they don’t have to cling to religion for every little thing.

I suspect most people here have great disdain for evangelists and what they represent but that doesn’t stop millions of people from eating that crap up. From speaking in tongues to handling snakes and everybody forking over their hard-earned money, the driving force behind fanaticism is ignorance.

That’s why fundamentalists hate media. Islamic fundamentalists hate Al-Jazeera because Al-Jazeera is a media outlet Muslims tend to trust. Even though Al-Jazeera doesn’t always represent the US in glowing terms, the journalists expose certain truths fundamentalist leaders prefer to keep under wraps.

Christian fundamentalists are not much better. They home school their children to shelter them from reality and they detest all forms of media because of the information it provides. They want everything skewed to fit their agendas.

The problem with all religions is that they become political. The bigger the church the more political it becomes. That’s because religion often provides those who dispense it with power. Power corrupts and politics ensue.

The solution? If you want to be spiritual believe in a god but don’t believe in a church.

claw, they tell us in NJ that our cigarette taxes go to pay for indigent care of smoking related illnesses, but last year the fund had a surplus of $100,000,000 that went to the state parks. Cigs just went up another dime, so I guess all of the sick have been healed and we’re just paying for healthy trees now.

Ohio’s legal age was 19 well into the 1980s. I remember Pennsylvania filing a a federal complaint against Ohio because kids from Pittsburgh would drive to Ohio to buy booze.

Pennsylvania also filed an injunction against Ohio around 1990 when Ohio raised its speed limit to 65. PA (isn’t that funny) was steamed because Ohio put up huge signs warning drivers that the speed limit was 55 at the border. PA was milking the border for a lot of speeding tickets.

To this day PA is known as a gigantic speed trap. PA troopers will pull you over for doing 5mph over the limit.

Actually the woman who started MADD left because she felt like the organization had lost it’s focus. Now MADD is all about prohibition.

I hate those stupid sobriety checkpoints. They nail people who are right at the legal limit while the real drunks are sneaking around the checkpoints.

A buddy of mine blew a .09 right after they dropped the limit to .08. Consider the fact that those machines have a margin of error of as much as .o3 and you have to wonder about the legality.

The funny thing is, shortly after he got his license back the judge who was presiding over his case got nailed for his fourth DUI in 8 years and he blew a .14.

Hey! That was true all the way until 1984 CB! LOL CB do you watch House?

One big argument they make is that they want to keep alcohol out of the High Schools. 1. Yeah RIGHT like THAT is working 2. Well then wouldn’t making the drinking age 19 work just as well for that? I’m just irked that the laws say “Sure go off to college, live on your own, but we can’t trust you with a beer!” I mean it is true, you CAN’T trust college Freshmen with beer … but you can’t trust college Seniors with it either. So now what? Bring back prohibition?

Our alcohol age restriction is odd but it dopes have some logic to it. The idea is that an 18 year-old is more likely to share his bounty with younger kids. I can see where there’s a problem. I turned 18 early in my senior year but because I looked older I had been the designated beer buyer for two years at that point. I didn’t have any issue with contributing to the delinquency of minors.

But why punish everybody? Enforce existing laws to discourage that sort of behavior.

And that’s our problem in general. We want to impose these proactive laws like seat belts. I wear mine all the time but I don’t like the fact that I’m legally required to. I’ve been told that the reason it’s a law is because it cuts down on health care costs. Fine, but why not tell people that they will be refused medical assistance if they are in an accident and they aren’t buckled up. The same with motorcycle helmets.

We can’t pass laws to eliminate danger.

    LOL…you kids are so young!
Legal drinking age was 18 when I was 18!
    Bwahahahahaha

Then some asshole wrapped his car around something and his mom started MADD and all Hell broke loose on everyone elses kid!!

Actually: Candy Lightner founded MADD in 1980 after her daughter, Cari, was killed by a repeat drunk driving offender.
But we all had to pay for it anyway!!
    Thanx Candy.

Yes Mishee. Federal law explicitly provides for religious, medical, employment and private club possession exceptions. The state by state regulations are only in regard to possession/consumption beyond the Federal exemptions. So, some states if you are under 21 you can’t drink except in Church or that tiny bit of alcohol in your cough syrup … in my boozy home state we have damn near EVERY legal end run around the Federal standards that we could have and still keep our highway funding … Kids can be in bars until 9pm as long as that bar serves food. Having a 15 year old pack of peanuts for sale counts as “serving food” they can be in restaurants all night long.

Crash, that argument only works if you don’t consider that drinking age on base is determined by the commanding officer. Military bases can (and many do) have a legal drinking age of 18. Also depending on where you are at 3 months old you can drink all the alcohol you can raise to your lips … but you can’t BUY it. Part of the reason Spring Breakers like to party in FL … underage consumption is not illegal there … only underage PURCHASE.

Europeans are more liberal when it comes to wine. For centuries sanitation was such that wine was safer to drink than water.

Don’t fall for that crap, Crash.
Politics is politics. Islam is a religion. Some politicians have used Islam to control the masses in their countries. They may dress like Holy-men but they are just politicians.

A lot of religions frown on drinking…
uhg, I didn’t know that, I just though it was 21 everywhere here.
It’s an old argument but why at 18 can one die for his / her country in war / police action, but can’t drink…here ?

You’ll never get it legalized (and taxed) as long as you also want to have your insurance company pay for you to stop using it.
For insurance coverage marijuana use must be an illness, but if you call it an illness say goodbye to legalization.

No Crash, but our age restriction is unusually high … most of Europe it is 16 or 18
Though that is for purchase … CONSUMPTION age in the USA varies state by state (an example I know well enough … In WI if a person under the age of 21 is married to a person over 21 the under age person can drink in any establishment as long as their of age guardian/spouse is with them. Children of any age can be served small amounts of alcohol by their parents in private settings like their home or a private room in a restaurant)

Yes, I agree that alcohol and other drugs cause so much more damage. People who are lovers of pot are usually lovers in general. They don’t kill, destroy or beat thier little ones. They are so much calmer and loving, sometimes they get kinda strange when high but you can carry on a conversation and they will not puke in your bathroom!

I love marijuana. I haven’t smoked it in years but I think it’s fantastic. I’m particularly fond of smoking a bowl or two and skiing but since I can be drug tested I don’t risk it. It’s stupid too because I can take two hits off a joint and test positive two weeks later but if I smoked crack it would be out of my system in two days. We’ve got truckers driving down the highway snorting line after line of coke but the DEA dances with delight over a marijuana bust.

The laws in this country are almost as hypocritical as the people. Alcohol is more destructive than pot but I can drink a case of beer every night if I want. People throw a fit when a celebrity or an athlete gets hit with a DUI but yet I see the same people wobbling out of the bar at happy hour to drive home. Meanwhile the pothead you look down on is chilling out at home watching The Wizard of Oz to the Dark Side of the Moon.

I know people who enjoy coke and they snort it recreationally but it doesn’t disrupt their lives. I know more people who like to get high on occasion and quite often they are among the most reasonable and responsible people I know. Then I know heavy drinkers who think that pot is the worst thing in the world because they’ve heard its a gateway drug. Meanwhile they can’t hold down a job because they need an extra hour to sleep away the headache.

I think we need to seriously analyze our legal system and reevaluate this country’s stance on drugs.

that sucks glo! sorry about that!

My old Mr. Kitty was diagnosed with FeLV and I had to give him 4 meds twice a day. That lasted a week and he hated it so much I decided to just let him go until he got bad and then put him down - and then he got all better and as far as I know he is living with my brother’s ex-g/f and is doing fine.

Well, he’s dehydrated, so they were putting fluids in, and he has kidney disease, which means I have to feed him prescription food which costs about twice as much as the (already expensive) food I give him now, and besides that, I have to feed Nellie that same food because they have always just had dried food available all day and it’s too late to change that now.

He is looking a little perkier than he looked last week, so maybe he’ll put a little weight back on and last a few more years.
