FINALLY you ask something of MY expertise!! (Been a temp for going on 9 years, blah!!) Bring copies of your resume and references, two forms of ID, and ask if they have an online option for filling out the application, and any testing they might do if needed (I usually have to take an A/P or General Acctg test, Excel, and sometimes Word)… and plan to be there a while. One upside to temp work is that you usually get paid more than you would be (no benefits at most places, although more and more are offering them - I wouldn’t take it, they SUCK) and that you usually get paid weekly. It’s nice to only starve for 6 days versus 13!

Cb, its not standard rate. its an ass-raping in new york. standard rate is 12-15% for as few pieces as i would be showing. here is a basic break down:
1-5 pieces, 8%
6-12 pieces, 12%
13-20 pieces, 15%
20-full show, 25% (which is the highest it should really ever be)
I already have to pay for my trip there, eventhough they said they’d comp me a hotel. i also have to use gallery-standard frames (some galleries request that artists use framing that is within the color scheme of the show, since josh agle uses bizarre colors and sometimes NO frames, the gallery has asked that i use metal frames when i currently use black)
youre right, it IS good to get my name out there and its a HUGE honor to be showing with Josh Agle (who is one of my favorite modern artists) but there will be four other people showing and i get limited space (meaning, i have NO SAY in where my pieces go, how they are lit, etc). Its a huge honor, people in NY pay more for art than they do in LA (so i can raise prices a bit) but…im nervous.

RB, umm only a little anal retentive. We are currently pushing 200 DVDs … we have the spread sheet because with that large a number of DVDs it is tough for us to organize them, or even remember what the hell we have when we want to watch something. Putting them in a spread sheet means we can sort by actor, director, genre or any of our other categories. Much easier when we settle in for a movie night and say “Hey! lets watch something with Allen Rickman” A quick sort and voila!

Mishee, I was up there a couple of years ago in September and it was actually 95 degrees. People were fanning themselves with newspaper.
