Our submitter in North Dakota found this birthday card from the local health clinic a little…off-putting.

The sins of the father

July 3rd, 2014 · 70 Comments

Kyle didn’t even want to open the card he got from his grandma for his 20th birthday, because he knew he was in for something more than $5 bill. “The week prior was my family reunion, and my dad decided not to go — and not to inform my grandma ahead of time,” Kyle says. Grandma decided to use Kyle’s birthday card to make her feelings about this clear.

It’s a great day…to move out of the house!

Alexandria in Australia says that the card she got from her parents on her 18th birthday (below) “is a pretty good summary of my formative years.”

Dear Alexandra, I think this card expresses the fact that, although we both love you very much we find it hard to say, just like you do. All the best for your adulthood. Dad With bells on! Love Mum

Dear Alexandra,

I think this card expresses the fact that, although we both love you very much we find it hard to say, just like you do. All the best for your adulthood.

Victoria in Maryland received this heartwarming card from her mother a few years ago. (“She was mad because I put an end to her partying in the garage at my house.”)

The sad thing is…

October 21st, 2013 · 27 Comments

Cristina in California had to smile when she saw the thank-you note her son composed to his friends. How’s that for subtlety?

Dear Conner, Dylan, and Ethan, Thank you for the spiderman legos. I wish I had a Wii too but the sad thing is I don't have one. Your buddy, Chase

And before you start in on “kids today” — I found a thank-you note my own father wrote to his grandparents circa 1958. Check out the P.S. on the back!

PS Thank you for sending Santa Claus money to bring me things for Christmas. Forgot these things: Space station, Drum Set, and Para-Jet. Love Tommy

Nobody does guilt trips quite like Grandma

August 28th, 2013 · 51 Comments

“My dear, sweet grandmother is a treasure in my life,” writes Jessi in Dallas. To her horror, however, she realized — upon receiving this anonymous postcard from ‘a friend,’ — that she had forgotten to wish her grandmother a happy birthday this year.

Already feeling pretty guilty, says Jessi: “I immediately called her and received an additional 40-minute guilt trip over the phone. Today I sent her a birthday card in the mail.” Still, Jessi can’t help but how long it’ll be before she makes it off of Grandma’s “naughty list.”

Jessica, Where are you? I know you are out there somewhere. Contact your grandmother. She is three years away from being eighty. She is deaf and all alone. A Friend.

Are you happy now?

July 11th, 2013 · 65 Comments

The day before her birthday, Emily in Baton Rouge was lamenting the fact that her husband had never once surprised me with a cookie cake. (Hint, hint.)

The next day, her husband “surprised” her with what Emily called “quite possibly the best present I’ve ever received — not only hilarious, but delicious as well!”

Are you happy now?

Meanwhile, writes Chanisa in Danbury, Connecticut: “This is what my husband wrote on my birthday cake after I nagged him about it for a week.”

Happy f*cking birthday

No problem — ’twas a piece of a cake!

“Our organization recently moved most of its employees from several small offices into one large office,” writes our submitter in Vancouver. “It only took five months for the kitchen conflict to ramp up into a full-blown note war.”

thank you for helping yourself to half of my birthday cake....I guess I didn't need the whole cake to share with my friends and coworkers anyways. ...and happy birthday to you too!

To the leaver of the cake: You're very welcome.

...and someone helped themselves to one of my steam buns (leftovers) in a takeout box but I have a bad cold so they'll get the bad karma back.

Six-year-olds make the best birthday cards

April 24th, 2013 · 23 Comments

Brad in Nebraska says this birthday card from his six-year-old niece, Dani, stopped the whole family in its tracks. (With its awesomeness, I assume!) Mckenna, you are one lucky lady.

I love you when you are scared and also sweet I love you if you can't chew corn and I love you when you hate mama's meat Happy Birthday Mckenna

Happy “WTF?” Wednesday, everyone!
